uates The Honorary Graduates of the Class of 2005 were chosen after a careful selection process. Individuals within '05 selected those people who they thought had demonstrated unwavering commitiment and service to the Naval Academy in general and to our class specifically. All nomi- nees were then compiled by the class officers and a survey set up to allow the class to choose the three that they beleived best met the criteria. ln the end three individuals stood out among the rest. They were Major Nagel, Commander Flonan, and GYSCT Baker. Each of these indi- viduals have shown remarkable dedication to the Midshipmen of the United States Naval Acade- my, and the Class of 2005 wishes to reward them with this small token of our appreciation. Con- gradulations and welcome to the Class of 2005. vm Ronan . 1 .1 ,I QQ Honorary Gradu 'S ' Commander Doc Ronan has done more than act as a doctor to our class. He has shown us to focus not only on the individual, but to care for them as well. Whenever we came to see him, he was eager to help us get well and back out being physically active, but never at the cost of our health. On top of all this, he showed us a sense of humor that was somehow able to make us smile no matter how poorly we felt, often eas- ing our anxieties when we most often needed it. When informed that he was elected one of our honorary graduates, he remarked that he was actually the primary care provider for the Class of 2006, saying, You don't think they will mind do you? Whatever the Class of 2006 feels, the Class of 2005 is privileged to have Command- er Flonan as an honorary member of our class.

Major Nagel is a Law and Marine Corps Practi- cum Professor and helps coach the men's rug- by team. But what really defines his time at the Academy is a quote written in large letters on his dry erase board: lT'S ABDUT THE MIDSHIP- MEN. As Major Nagel explains it, Loyalty goes both ways...I battled for the Midshipmen, because it is not about being liked, it is about doing the right thing. He has battled so much that he was sur- prised he was allowed to receive this award, but as he puts it, you do not work hard for rewards because what makes a difference at the end of the day is the effect you have on those around you. Major Nagel has indeed had a profound effect on each member of the Class of 2005. Major Jeff N agel, USMC Gunny Sergeant Baker came to the Academy after being a scout sniper and is now the 30th Compa- ny Senior Enlisted. He is also involved with sev- eral teams on the yard. What he is really known throughout the brigade for, though, is pacing every single mile-and-a-half run for all thirty companies during the PPT forthe last three years. He believes that if he can pass thirty runs, he can motivate the midshipmen to believe they can pass one. He says, I will never ask the Mids to do something I am not able to do myself? Two years ago in June, Gunny Baker fell four stories while helping to run a Marine Corps summer training program, breaking multiple bones in his body. The doctors believed he would be learning to walk again after 6 months, but at the 6 month mark he was training for a mar- athon. He not only finished, but ran a personal best. The first thing you read when you crack a book on leadership is that you lead by example. Gunny has been an excellent example to our class. YSGT Judd Baker, USMC Honorary Graduates 23
