Unbeaten for the first time since 1971, coach Rick Clothier ' s varsity heavyweight crew capped an outstanding 8-0 regular season by capturing the two major trophies at the 82nd Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships held on Onondaga Lake near Syracuse, NY. The varsity eight stroked its way to a winning time of 5:54.7 in the Varsity Challenge Cup, Navy ' s second such title in the last five years. The Mids also pocketed the Jim Ten Eyck Trophy, symbolic of overall achievement at the regatta, for the third consecutive season. Navy ' s freshman four with coxswain, under the direction of Kenny Dreyfuss, collected a first place finish at the IRA championships while the freshman eight placed third in the Grand Finals.

Impressive throughout the spring campaign, Coach Clothier ' s tenth season at the Navy helm featured a third place Grand Finals performance at the nationally prestigious San Diego Crew Classic, a sixth straight Goes Cup Trophy (defeating Cornell and Syracuse), and an Adams Cup victory over Harvard and Penn. It was the first time since 1971 that the Midshipmen have walked away with that coveted trophy, and the ninth time overall in the 48-year history of the Adams Cup competition.
