N 1853, Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry in his flagship, the ( Mississippi, anchored offUraga, Japan. By matching dignity and color ) with greater dignity and more color, the Commodore gained for the white races of the world the respect and commercial amenity of the Japanese, and also enacted one of those dramatic scenes in American his- tory which repay in memorable experience the real debt to the naval officer.

5he constitution I C the squadron en£ - Tripolitan pirates. HE CONSTITUTION , under Commodore Preble, was the flagship of igaged from 1801 to 1804 in the war with the ipolitan pirates. The little navy of the United States paved the way for the freedom of the Mediterranean, sounded the death knell of piracy in all seas, and taught the Tripolitans that the new nation across the sea had developed a long and powerful arm.
