You entered West Point in the wake of 9!ll - knowing the challenges that potentially lay ahead. In preparation for those challenges, you endured four years of strenuous academic, military, and physical preparation. You have now embarked to lead soldiers in a war whose varied challenges will require your full strength, enduring character, and unlimited sacrifice. We are confident that your intellectual vitality and ability to respond to the dynamics of a changing world will serve the country well. The Greek philosopher Thucydides observed: The nation that makes a great distinction between its scholars and its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its lighting done by fools. You are warriors and scholars, and I encourage you to pursue both mastery of your profession and life-long intellectual development. Each is essential as you rise to increased levels of responsibility within our Army and our Nation. We do not know exactly what the world will look like in ten, twenty, or thirty years. The United States will face new challenges and our battles will be on unpredictable fronts. Your ability to adapt, think creatively, and lead successfully will be the linchpin for our nation's defense. Our entire faculty is confident in your abilities, proud of your accomplishments, and excited about your journey. Welcome to the Long Gray Line. Serve well.
