STATES MILITARY ACADEMY Gibran. Discussing children in The Prophet, he wrote, You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. And so we have tried to impart to you the important val- ues of the past, while preparing you to deal with the unknown challenges that lie from twenty to thirty years ahead. I envy you the career which awaits you. For me, this career has been one that I would not have changed. While Gibran says that I cannot visit the house of tomorrow, I still would wish only to join you again as a lieutenant and to start another thirty-five years of active service. Good luck, and may many of us serve together again! ■ k«i«ri . ' ' ' SJI H m ' ' - B . li H ■; B L 1 ■ 1

i Sr ' I welcome the opportunity to record a few thoughts for you on the eve of my departure from West Point. Leave-takings are always difficult, but this one is especially so. It would be superfluous for me to com- ment on my feelings for this institution, except per- haps to mark that my attachment to it has grown, during the period of my service here, more than I could have guessed or thought possible. From my perspective, I have seen our curriculum and programs undergo some rather sweeping changes. As a result I am acutely aware that the constant factor — the source of the Academy ' s enduring worth — is the unvarying quality and dedication of its cadets. You will be joining the Army shortly after I leave it. I hope that each of you will derive the personal satisfaction from your careers that I have from mine. I know that I shall never encounter a finer group of men. i0
