MIDSHIPS UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY DEDICATIO REAR ADMIRAL Jack Buono Ackerman Auditoriam has probably never been filled with as much applause and cheer as the moment RADM. Jack Buono said words, “Sir, I am in Command of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy”. For the first time in many years an experienced marine industry leader, and Kings Pointer has finally taken the helm as Superintendent of the Academy; with his experience and leadershi will lead to a better future. The Staff of 2019 Midships is pleased to dedicate this year’s yearbook to RADM. Jack Buono whose presence here at the Acadi ensures its stability as one of the finest institutions in the United States. To RADM. Buono, we welcome you back home. Upon his first few words here at the Academy, RADM. Buono has already challenged the midshipmen and staff to live up to the words I “Acta Non Verba”. As he reminds everyone of the Academy’s history of service during World War II, the loss of 142 midshipmen, and the outj of licensed merchant mariners of extraordinary quality, he asks us one question. “Should that be a best kept secret ” With a resounding respons from midshipmen and staff, everyone stood up to shout “NO!” With shouting of “NO” in unison, RADM Buonon. gave us his ultimate goal an plan for the best kept secret in the United States. “WE SHALL BE A SECRET NO LONGER”. With RADM. Buono’s guidance, he is determined to lead us to this goal as the thirteenth Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. RADM Buono’s experience stems from the greatness of the Academy. He graduated from Kings Point in 1978 to take his commission as a officer in the United States Naval Reserve. Upon graduation, he joined the Marine Department of Exxon Company USA, a predecessor organization of SeaRiver Maritime, Inc. From 1978 to 1986, RADM. Buono served as a deck officer on many crude and chemical tankers, eventually working his way up to become a Master Mariner. In 1991, RADM. Buono came shoreside to work in the management of SeaRiver I Maritime. Over the years he worked his way up through the ranks to eventually retire as the President and CEO of SeaRiver Maritime in 2016. During his time as a mariner, RADM. Buono continued to serve in the United States Navy Reserve. He was part of the Navy for a total of eleven years and rose to the rank of Lieutenant. RADM Buono’s experience and hard work over the years has not gone unnoticed. He has received numerous awards and citations includii the USMMA Meritorious Service and Outstanding Professional Achievement Awards, the Seafarers International House 2017 Honoree Award, I Seamen’s Church Institute 2016 Safety Leader Award, and the North America Marine Environmental Protection Association 2016 Environment. Leader Award. RADM Buono was also listed among the Top One Hundred Most Influential People in Shipping 2012-2015 by Lloyd’s List. Despite the Class of 2019 only being able to see the beginning of his time in office, we are glad to have finished our time here with his I presence and guidance. As we leave the Academy upon graduation, we know that it is being left in the skilled hands of a true mariner and lead 2 In June of 2015, the Class of 2019 was greeted by the Class of 2016. Like all the classes before, 2019 began their transformation from Candidates to Plebes. At the time, it seemed like this couple week endeavor would never end, followed by a a Plebe Year that would last forever. Eventually our time as Plebes would come to an end and we would eventually work our way up to First Classmen. Now 2019 will lead the way and train the Class of 2022. ffc l wr. '-= = J V’ JmJrjc-Qu «12022 On Friday June 29th, 2018 the Class of 2022 started their first day of the next 4 years. Heads were shaved, corners were squared, and the campus was filled with the sound of Snap Pop! and Sir Yes Sir! . The next few weeks would not be the most enjoyable, but the Class of 2022 would be molded by the upperclassmen. Soon they would be transformed from Candidates to Plebes. ACCEPTANCE I WEEKEND i On September 1st, the class of 2022 took their oath of office and were accepted into the regiment of midshipman. Once sworn into their position, the class of 2022 then formed up and joined the rest of their midshipman counterparts. After a few weeks of Indoc and classes, the Class of 2022 finally got their first break and a well deserved long weekend with their families. 7 75 th Anniversary 2018's homecoming was a bil more special compared to other years. 2018 marked the Academy’s 75th Anniversary, creating a real special occasion. Alumni from the class of 1943 showed up in attendance and a great speech was given by VADM John Wolfe (88’), who is the highest ranking King’s Point Alumni. During this weekend, the Academy also unvieled the plaque dedicated to the 142 that had been covered up since World War 2. nHBHBHi 8 9 11 We Remember On September 11th, 2001 much of the regiment of midshipman were only a few years old at the time. Despite their age, the impact of 9 11 still resonates with us 17 years later. On September 11th, 2018 the regiment gathered in remembrance of that fateful day. As the day went on we mourned the loss of all those who had died, but remembered all those from our faculty and staff who took to the call and ran to the towers. Great Neck Alert also took part in the events by allowing the American Flag to be flown from one of their fire engines on Barney Square. 9 Senior Senior Luau is the first major senior event of the year. After spending two years apart during their 3rd and 2nd class years, 2019 A and B splitters finally get a chance to reunite and catch up on all of the events that occurred over sea and school. Senior Luau is a time to celebrate and let loose as 2019 enjoys the food, refreshments, music, and the reunification of the class. This is the first initial step for the many senior events to occur during the year. The Class of 2022 helped make Senior a memorable one. Real leis were shipped to KP and bestowed on the 1st Classmen by 2022 during noon lunch formation in recognitions of the first senior event on campus Ring Dance 19’ After three long years, the class of 2019 finally get to raise their glasses and cheer to being a 1st Classman! The long months at sea and the countless hours of studying has finally paid off. The First Classmen will get their rings dipped in the water of the seven seas and blessed by many of our favorite professors and faculty. Cheers to 2019! j The 13th Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy On November 9th, 2018 RADM Jack Buono (78’) took the oath of office and became the 13th superintendent of the academy. During the ceremony, Buono’s civilian jacket was taken off and his family placed his admiral shoulder boards and jacket upon him. The room erupted with thunderous applause after the oath of office was conducted. This truly was an exciting day as RADM Buono leads the Academy in a new direction, to no longer have Kings Point be the nation's best kept secret. President of the United States Donald J. The season is celebrated through many ways including lighting of the flagpole, caroling by the Plebes, the Festival of Lights, enjoying the spirits at pub night, and coming together for the Holiday Dinner. Despite the cold winter or having to celebrate the holidays at sea, KP sure knows how to enjoy the most wonderful time of the year. 44 OUT ON THE TOWNO O O 0 WAKE ME UP IN GREAT NECK As hard as Kings Pointers work, they probably play twice as hard. After a long week of studying there is nothing better than taking a night off and heading to New York City. With many events such as Fleet Week, Santa Con, Comic- Con, St. Patricks Day, 13- days, or $8 pitchers at BHT, Kings Pointers always find (or become) the life of the party. So whether you're just wanting to have a quiet night with your friends, listen to Tyler Mowry perform at BHT, or dance the night away in an open bar, there is always something to do. Sometimes, we might go a little bit too hard during our time out on the town. Good thing there's always the Battle Train to I I r ) O STUDYING OR SNOOZING? The Football team competed against Coast Guard for the Secretaries Cup, but sadly lost 26-12. Despite this loss we'll still go on into the future to BEAT COAST GUARD! d I N I I FOOTBALL is what Coach Toop wrote on a white board early in the offseason, setting the tone for the upcoming year. It is the motto in which the team demonstrated all season as the Mariners kicked off the season with a win over Misercordia. The football team dominated early in the season with a big win against SUNY Maritime. The seniors and underclass brought high energy to practice each day, working towards goals set in order beat their upcoming opponents. The Mariners brought their lunch pales and beat Springfield and WPI in late season victories. Although, the season was not perfect, the Mariners experienced tough, hard fought losses against MIT and Coast Gaurd. However, what best illustrates the 2018 Mariners is how they responded after Coast Gaurd to beat Endicott College in the New England Bowl. i Joe Bellomo Wiley Martin Brooks Cannell Team Captains Misericordia W, 30-9 SUNY Maritime W, 34-21 Maine Maritime W, 35-14 MIT L, 31-24 Norwich W, 33-24 Springfield W, 17-14 WPI W, 25-24 Catholic W, 44-10 Coast Guard L, 26-12 Endicott W, 38-22 Men's Soccer Team Captains: Neil Painter, Joseph Springer, Mike Mischler Coaches: Andrew McCarthy, William Sprouse 74 I We are very proud of all that we have accomplished this season. KP MORAL SCIENCE SOCIETY The Kings Point Moral Science Society (KPMSS) is a club whose purpose is to develop the critical thinking required of ship’s officers and military officers by discussing current events through an ethical lens. Meeting once a week in the library, club meetings begin with a conversation on current events, and then open up to the weekly topic voted on by club members. Topics have ranged from the atomic bombings of WWII, Confederate statues, mandatory organ donation, and the death penalty. KPMSS prides itself as being the only functioning academically oriented club on campus. in CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP CLUB Christian Fellowship Club (known as CFC) is Kings Point’s Protestant Christian club. Run by midshipmen, CFC meets every Monday and offers Bible studies, small group discussions, fellowship time, and a time and place to relax from the cares of the world. Each trimester, CFC provides opportunities for midshipmen to attend retreats with other federal service academies, allowing them to meet and make friends at other schools as well as to hear wisdom from more experienced military officers from nearly every branch of the military. CFC’s goal is to build a faithful community of midshipmen and expand the chapel’s reach on campus. 112 NEWMAN CLUB Chapel Choir USMMA Chapel Choir serves the Church and USMMA by providing music and cantering during Mass. Our Choir Director, Dr. Katherine Meloan, provides steadfast support in leading the group each and every Sunday. Every Chapel Choir member is moved by and thankful for her dedication, and Christ’s presence in the Eucharist, to consistently participate in the Mass and glorify God. 114 f1 Glee Club The Glee Club continues to stay busy year round. Some notable events the Academy Glee Club has performed at include: Singing the National Anthem at a New York Mets game, and frequently driving down to Washinton D.C to perform in front of various maritime and state officials. Long time president, and senior Corey Simoneaux frequently said, “I love the Glee Club, and singing in the choir makes me love and appreciate Kings Point even more!” EMS The USMMA EMS Squad covers all medical emergencies on campus for the midshipmen, faculty, and staff. The EMT's on campus maintain a continuous watch 24 7 while also volunteering hours down at the Vigilant Fire House helping man calls in Nassau County gaining valuable knowledge and experience on a larger variety of emergency calls. This training and experience helps prepare the midshipmen EMT’s for any medical scenario that may take place on a ship during their sea year. COR I ! I 1 The Climbing and Outdoor Recreation club focuses on keeping its members physically active while giving them a chance to enjoy the great outdoors. From a day well spent at the beach, to Spike Ball tournaments, ultimate frisbee, or rock climbing, the COR club puts smiles on a countless number of faces. COR club cultivates great memories, hours of laughter, but most importantly, it brings KP Midshipmen together to form priceless friendship bonds. 117 Pistol Team It was an awesome season! I had the chance to compete with a great group of guys and some awesome shots. I watched some go from first time shooters all the way to Nationals! Competing at Nationals was a great way for myself and fellow Senior Henry Baer to finish our collegiate shooting careers strong. There is a lot of potential on the team and I can’t wait to see where they go from here! i ✓ Ethan Pieper KP Hockey The KP Hockey team started the season by hosting a “Battle of the Branches” tournament at Madison Square Garden between Kings Point, VMI, Navy, and Coast Guard, placing 3rd overall. The team fought hard all season, cheered on by loyal KP Puck fans. In its last game of the season, KP Hockey hosted SUNY Maritime, invited the entire plebe class to attend and cheer them on, and ended their season with a 10-1 victory. Forward Dang Do ( 21) and defenseman and team captain Daniel Zakrevski ( 3) are the two graduating seniors this year. BJJ CLUB The USMMA BJJ Team is a collegiate club sport that teaches Brazilian Jujitsu, with opportunities to compete against other colleges and service academies, as well as regular open competitions. BJJ is a martial art and a combat sport. Practitioners learn a powerful form of self- defense, get a great work out somewhat similar to a wresding practice, and have opportunities to compete against other practitioners of the sport. RADIO CLUB Radio Club provides audio and visual support to the regiment. Our main services include music in Delano, drone photos of the campus, and sound set ups for academy events. Club members also study to obtain amateur hamm radio licenses so that we can continue the tradition of the original USMMA Radio Club. 121 NOLS Club The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Club is a community of midshipman who aspire to test, strengthen, and ultimately find the leader they are meant to be through expeditions with NOLS. Each summer, a few Kings Point midshipmen venture off into the wild in a joint expedition with the Naval Academy, guided by NOLS instructors. They spend one month backpacking throughout the wild, adopting leadership skills through trial by fire as they guide each other in the unknown territory. As the club continues to grow and logistics become more optimized, we hope to have a King’s Point exclusive expedition soon. (M n Valentine and Collett with NOLS instructor (above), M n Hayton (far right). All photos in Talkeetna, Alaska) 122 Army Ops The Mission of the Army Operations Group is to develop leaders capable of excelling at the Basic Officer Leaders Course (BOLC) and their first duty assignment in the United States Army. The Army Operations Program both mentally and physically challenges midshipmen interested in the Army throughout various training evolutions focused on leadership, aquatic survival, land navigation, radio communications, weapons familiarization, and physical training. You've got what it ! takes, but it's going to take everything you’ve got. Go ‘ ■Army. GAMES CLUB Games Club provides the academy with the means for the members of the regiments to get together and play games. We are always open to sharing games that we know and willing to learn any new ones brought to the club. With Games Club, there is always someone willing to share the experience of any type of tabletop game that wants to be played. 123 The Vibe Tribe had been organized to provide opportunities to relax and explore the process of understanding their minds and bodies through various physical, mental, and cultural activities. The club has been sanctioned to provide a foundation of midshipmen leaders that seek to share their knowledge of things like yoga, meditation, healthy eating, music appreciation, dance, and brings together diverse groups of people to share their experiences at Kings Point and in the world. Ultimately, The Vibe Tribe seeks to promote health and wellness as something that is easily fit into the weekly routine of a Kings Pointer. I 124 KAPPA PI LAMBDA We have three pillars: community, mentorship, and discussion. Through these values, we strive to create a sense of unity amongst the women of Kings Point. With our program, we give the female plebes the opportunity to find guidance in this culture-shock of a new environment that we know as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. We pair them with a role model, another woman to look up to who has been down the very same steep and winding road that now lay before them. For the First Class females, they gain invaluable experience as true leaders as they take on the enormous responsibility of guiding the development of a fellow woman in her first year of college. We are Kappa Pi Lambda, the women’s mentorship program here at Kings Point. 125 CYBER DEFENSE CLUB The CDX program seeks to raise awareness among future military leaders and cyber specialists about information assurance challenges, reinforce classroom instruction, build experience needed to secure and defend real- world networks, and expose participants to advanced technologies and cyber-attack techniques. ENGINEERING SOCIETY Kings Point Engineering Society is a new club founded this year that focuses on exploring engineering opportunities that are available to graduates shore side. The highlight of this year is when several members were able to visit SUNY Stony Brook’s combined cycle power plant, with several alumni giving midshipmen an extensive tour of the various systems found there. 126 If” YEARBOOK STAFF Editor-in-Chief: Gunnar Johnson 2nd Editor-in-Chief: Elizabeth Livi Letter from the Editors: Before starting off, we just want to say thank you to everyone for helping make this year's Midships. This book was made in collaboration with many midshipmen to get their inside details along with photos of clubs, sports, midshipman life, and all the memories. The yearbook staff may have organized this book, but the midshipmen are the ones who actually make it. Getting a chance to learn more about the individuals of the great class of 2019 was amazing an experience. We would like to say thank you to all our photographers over the years who took the time to get some of these amazing photographs you see throughout this yearbook. As they say, “ A picture is worth a thousand words. Along with that, we'd like to thank all our editors who came together to help make this great book and helping record our history. To 2019, this book is our history over the course of 4 years. Through all the good times and bad times our time at KP is not one to be forgotten. So as we beat on into the future and make a name for ourselves, gaining more friends and experiences along the way, never forget the family we created here and take a moment to stroll down memory lane. Remember, don't be a stranger and we hope to see all of you again in the future! Zengel I - 160 161 Starting offas a group of kids from all over the nation, 2019 united together as a class to overcome Year $ 165 Everyday we were tested, but our bonds and friendships would grow tighter, and eventually we were recognized. Though we were separated by the sea, we would continue to develop ourselves as 3rd and 2nd Classmen. We worked hard in the classrooms, on the sports fields, and out at sea. 166 I Finally we would return together as a class to finish off our 1st Class Year. We took charge of the regiment and started developing ourselves as leaders. Through this time we became closer together as a class and celebrated our time as the year went by.
