We sail the oceans, we sail the seas, we sail the rivers, we connect each continent, we connect each country, we connect each island, we explore every horizon, we research, we drill, we deliver your cars, we power your cars, we deliver your fuel, we keep you warm, we deliver your medicines, we deliver your food, we supply your stores, we deliver your presents, we take you on vacations, we carry your warriors, we sail under the stars, we sail under the sun, when you point to a random spot of ocean on a globe as a child, and realize that the nearest point of land is thousands of miles away, well yes, we are there. We are not easy to find, you may not know us, you will probably never meet us, we are spread over millions of miles of the deep blue, but we are there, we have been there for centuries, we will always be there. We are the Merchant Marine, we are mariners, we are sailors, we are a family, we are one, and no matter what, we shall sail, we will continue to sail, my God we will sail. Class of 2016 ' Class of 2016 Indoctrination and Acceptance Candidate to Plebe • • • • The class of 2016 reported for their indoctrination on July jth, 2012. The candidates began daily training at 0500 with pt on Tomb Field, followed with a delicious breakfast in Delano to fuel their busy days. The class of 2016 was accepted into the Regiment of Midshipmen on September ijth, 2012. AND«son 1 Class of 2016 Recognition Plebe to Midshipman! The class of 2016 was finally recognized on March ijth, 2013. The training and decision to recognize 2016 caused MUCH CONTROVERSY AND TENSION THROUGHOUT THE REGIMENT. HOWEVER, 20l6 REMAINED UNITED AND PROVED TO BE DESERVING OF THE TITLE MIDSHIPMEN. nym 3oinss August 13, 2015 Aloha: The Class of 2016 celebrated their reunion with a Hawaiian themed party by Eldridge Pool. The alumni hosted the event with delicious foods, GAMES, AND PRIZES. AFTER THE KEGS RAN DRY AND THE SUN WENT DOWN, THE MIDSHIPMEN HULAED OVER TO THE PUB TO CONTINUE THEIR PARTY! The LUAU WAS THE FIRST OF MANY WILD NIGHTS FOR 20l6 AND SET THE TONE FOR AN AWESOME YEAR! i RING DANCE August 18, 2015 The Class of 2016 celebrated their Ring Dance at Gotham Hall in New York City. The highly anticipated DANCE WILL CONTINUE TO BE ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENTS OF FIRST CLASS YEAR. The class ring will forever PROVIDE A BOND AMONGST CLASSMATES AND THE LONG STANDING HISTORY AND TRADITIONS OF THE UNITED STATES Merchant Marine Academy. Each year the senior class counts down to GRADUATION WITH PARTIES TO COMMEMORATE MILESTONE POINTS. The CLASS OF 20l6 CELEBRATED 300 NIGHTS TO GRADUATION AT BOHEMIAN HALL and Beer Garden in Astoria. The event ended WITH THE SCHOOL BEING BANNED AND THE ADMINISTRATION QUESTIONING HAVING ANY FURTHER PARTIES. DUE TO SOME DELAY, 20l6 CELEBRATED IJO NIGHTS, INSTEAD OF 200. The EVENT WAS HELD AT A PRIVATE LOFT IN SOHO. The FINAL MILESTONE OF THE YEAR, 100 NIGHTS, WAS HELD ON THE 2IST FLOOR OF A BUILDING IN THE middle of New York City. In true 2016 FASHION, THE CLASS WAS KICKED OUT AFTER A DOOR BROKE AND SOMEONE SAT ON A SINK... ! i s ' i ft 1 BEAT COAST GUARD! For four years you are told the horrors of Coast Guard license exams by teachers, upperclassmen, and alumni. As a plebe, it SEEMS LIKE YOULL NEVER REACH THAT POINT. SUDDENLY, YOURE A SENIOR BOMBARDED BY CAPSTONE, LICENSE PREP CLASSES, CONSTANT STUDYING, AND HUNDREDS OF PRACTICE TESTS IN THE FINAL TRIMESTER. YOURE TRAPPED IN THE BASEMENT OF THE LIBRARY WITH MURPHY books, Lapware, charts, and the Coast Guard question bank. Nothing can compare to the stress felt walking into O’Hara THE FIRST MORNING AND FEELING LIKE YOURE FAILING EVERY TEST AS YOU TAKE IT. WAITING FOR THE RESULTS ON THE LAST DAY MADE YOU FEEL SICK, BUT SEEING THAT YOU PASSED EVERYTHING AND RINGING THE BELL WILL STAY WITH YOU FOREVER. CONGRATULATIONS 20l6 ON HAVING BEST FIRST TIME PASS RATE FOR DECKIES SINCE 1981 AND ENGINEERS SINCE 2010! AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ENTIRE CLASS FOR PASSING EXAMS TO BECOME THIRD MATES AND THIRD ASSISTANT ENGINEERS! RING THAT BELL! Change of Command June i6, 2016 The Change of Command Ceremony was held in Powell Oval to formally transfer regimental leadership from the class of 2016 to 2017. Immediately following the ceremony, the graduating class sprinted around Wiley Hall, down THE HILL, AND JUMPED INTO ElDRIDGE POOL IN THEIR SUMMER WHITES. 0 r 4 V June 16, 2016 Following Change of Command, the class of 2016 was joined by FAMILY AND FRIENDS FOR A CRUISE AROUND MANHATTAN. The BEAUTIFUL NIGHT WAS ACCOMPANIED BY EXCITEMENT, ENERGY, AND PLENTY OF alcohol. In true Kings Pointer fashion everyone went to the bar AND WOULD RETURN WITH TWO OR THREE DRINKS IN HAND, MUCH TO THE DISMAY OF THEIR PARENTS. Graduation June 18, 2016 The Class of 2016 represented 42 states and three foreign countries, including Malaysia, the Republic of Korea, and the Republic of Panama. During graduation, 38 graduates were sworn in as active duty officers in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. An ADDITIONAL 25 GRADUATES WILL BE SWORN IN TO THE MARINE CORPS, AlR FORCE, AND COAST GUARD AT A LATER DATE. LlKE BEN MORRIS SAID, TRYING TO EXPLAIN WHAT THIS PLACE IS ALL ABOUT TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD IS LIKE TRYING TO GET THROUGH THE SUEZ CANAL ON A SHIP WITHOUT CARTONS OF Marlboro's and we no longer have to suffer through it everyday. As we all move on from our home of the last four years, remember SOME ADVICE FROM OUR FRIENDLY LONG ISLAND DuDE, VALEDICTORIAN TOM KlOEPFER, SET THE STANDARDS FOR ALL TO FOLLOW, QUESTION EVERYTHING, ______________________________ VALUE HARD WORK AND SWEAT, AND EVERYONE WILL STILL HAVE CADET MOMENTS. wmtitMtmw ml «t ns J II II II (!!!!! mmtl Ull!(!l I!!!! mm President of the United States of America 28 Barack Obama Superintendent RADM James A. He RETIRED AFTER 42 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO USMMA AND 54 YEARS OF SERVICE TO OUR NATION. AFTER GRADUATING from the Academy in 1962, Captain Hard returned to USMMA in 1966 to serve under Admiral McClintock. During the Vietnam War Captain Hard returned to sea as a Merchant Marine Officer. Then he went to sea as a Navy Officer, and became Officer in Charge of a port in Vietnam. Later, the Master Mariner RETURNED TO THE ACADEMY TO TEACH NAVIGATION Law. SURVIVING CAPTAIN HaRDS NaV Law IS A STRUGGLE ALL Kings Point deckies can relate to each other with. Many midshipmen received their first F in his class WHEN THEY FAILED TO REACH HIS ELUSIVE 70% PASSING GRADE. MIDSHIPMEN LOATHED HIM AND DREADED HIS CLASS, BUT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE PREPARED FOR THE RULES OF THE ROAD COAST GUARD EXAM. CAPTAIN HARD TAUGHT HIS STUDENTS TO NOT REGURGITATE MATERIAL, BUT TO FULLY COMPREHEND AND QUESTION IT. He CHALLENGED his students’ every word and left them with plenty of memories. Captain Hard is a man who truly lived up to his name, yet was always willing to help and motivate students. Thank you captain Hard. Fair winds and following seas. ' Not like, what is it?,' 'oh, shame,’ 'your attempt at levity is noted,' 'some students like MY CLASS SO MUCH, THEY END UP TAKING IT TWICE,’ YOU EITHER GET OLD, OR YOU GET DEAD,' NO TOUCHY FEELY STUFF IN MY CLASS,' BACK IN the day ,’ 'I'm not disagreeing with you,' 'questions ON THE TOPIC? ' -Captain Hard Captain Kenneth R. Force Captain Kenneth R. Force, USMS, joined Kings Point as Director of Music in 1971. He holds a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and 6th year Professional Diploma from the Manhattan School of Music. He HAS AN ADDITIONAL MASTERS DEGREE IN COUNSELING FROM THE New YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY. CAPTAIN Force's distinguished musical career includes assistant first trumpet with the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra; numerous Broadway shows; the Master Virtuosi of New York; and numerous free-lance positions. In addition, he was a member of the Ringling Bros, and Barnum Bailey Circus Band under the LEGENDARY MERLE EvANS AND THE CLYDE BEATY-COLE BROS. ClRCUS BAND. CAPTAIN FORCE RECEIVED HIS bandsman's diploma from the U.S. Naval School of Music in Washington, D.C. and subsequently served as A CORNET SOLOIST WITH THE FlRST U.S. ARMY BAND AT GOVERNORS ISLAND, New YORK. SEVERAL YEARS LATER, HE served as Bandmaster for the 42ND Infantry (Rainbow) Division Band and the 319TH Statue of Liberty Army Reserve Band. Captain Force was appointed as a professional consultant to Columbia Artists Management for sever British Military Band tours of North America. He co-produced the British Salute to the U.S. Bicentennial Tattoo in Newport, Rhode Island which featured a cast of over 5,000. In 2002, Captain Force was made an honorary member of the Alumni of the Merchant Marine Academy. Captain Force was a dedicated member of the Kings Point community who deeply cared about each midshipman. This year, Midshipmen Caitlin McCabe and Gus Sawicki were the lucky two tasked with raising the puppies. They encountered many sleepless nights and worked hard to train their pups, Tristan and Pal. Both Gus and Caitlin had great success with their dogs. Gus' puppy, Tristan, was accepted into formal guide dog training and left the Academy in April. Catlin's pup, Pal, was selected early in January to become a veteran dog and she was tasked with training a new puppy. Andy. It is no question that these puppies made a positive impact not only on our campus, but also in the lives of those they will help. Gus and Caitlin are living CmdeDosW 3 oundation For Thp Mind. Inc 1 Power couple On Thursdays, Land Hall became the hotspot on campus. Every week parents of midshipmen sent cookies and treat FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY FOR THE REGIMENT. WITHOUT FAIL, THE HOMEY ATMOSPHERE, SMELL OF BAKING COOKIES, AND AMAZING PARENTS ALWAYS PUT A SMILE ON EVERYONE’S FACE. ThANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR PARENTS! To my 2016 shipmates: It was my absolute privilege and honor to be Pub Master for the Class of 2016.1 feel that the Pub IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF LIFE AT KP FOR FIRST CLASSMEN, AND I HOPE I WAS ABLE TO DO THE JOB justice. The job often came with more stress THAN ANTICIPATED, BUT I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED BEING ABLE TO SERVE YOU ALL DURING OUR TIME AS SENIORS. I ENJOYED BEING YOUR BARTENDER, AND GETTING TO KNOW ALL OF YOU BETTER PROVIDING YOU WITH THE MUCH NEEDED FUEL TO GET YOU THROUGH THE LONG AND ARDUOUS SCHOOL WEEK. I THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING LOYAL PATRONS AT THE LAST TRUE GETAWAY WE HAVE ON CAMPUS. Special shout out to all those who helped me run the Pub. Without the help of my classmates (Jordan Timmons and Eric Izzo especially) and my PO’s (Kipp, Skord, and Zubchevich) the place WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO FUNCTION AND WED ALL HAVE TO SUFFER SOBRIETY FOR ANOTHER NIGHT. I KNOW I SPEAK FOR ALL OF 20l6 WHEN I THANK YOU FOR THE EXTRA WORK. We as Kings Pointers miss out a great deal on THE NORMAL “COLLEGE LIFE” OF DRINKING ON SCHOOL NIGHTS AND TYPICAL COLLEGIATE DEBAUCHERY, BUT THE PuB WAS A LITTLE TASTE OF WHAT WE GAVE UP IN ORDER TO PURSUE BETTER CAREERS AND LIVES. I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST GOING FORWARD INTO YOUR MARITIME PROFESSIONS AND MILITARY SERVICE. FAIR WINDS, FOLLOWING SEAS, AND THE NEXT TIME WE MEET THE FIRST ROUND IS ON ME! The women's volleyball teams faced off in Liebertz Gymnasium with an intense match between the rivals. The Mariners came out on top with a straight- set victory over the Bears. It was the first victory for USMMA over USCGA since the 1999 volleyball season. At Brooks Stadium, the Mariners and Bears battled in an intense men's soccer game. After a scoreless first half, the Mariners scored in the 52nd minute of the game then continued to keep the Bears at bay. The Mariners won, 1-0, over the Bears. The Merchant Marine football team completed the sweep of Coast Guard and brought the Secretaries Cup home. The 2015 season-opener at Brooks Stadium for the Mariners saw a game with a strong defense to keep the Bears out of the end zone. The Mariners won 14-3. «if Guard Weekend Training Vessel KINGS POINTER GOOD-SHIP LOLLIPOP NAVIGATION LAW REMEDIATION TRIPS Midshipmen spent their summer and fall vacations on the T V Kings Pointer in order to remediate CAPT Hard's Navigation Law sea project or to obtain their final sea days. During the Summer 2015 trip, seniors took the ship to Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine, Massachusetts Maritime in Bourne, Massachusetts, and SUNY Maritime, in Bronx, New York. During the Fall 2015 trip, seniors took the ship to Baltimore, Maryland. CAPT Donohoe and Chief Mate Amster continuously referred to the Kings Pointer as the Good Ship Lollipop. Seniors stood four hour bridge watches and two hour port watches. The trip proved to be a great learning experience for everyone involved. Sea Year is to ail dt0 the ocean. When I agreed to be an editor at the beginning of the school year I didn't realize how much work actually went into this book. While I hated it sometimes because of everything going on at school, I did have fun working on the yearbook. A big thank you to everyone who sent in pictures and thank you to the kids I stole pictures from on Facebook. The 3 DAY STARTED WITH FREEZING MARCHING TOURS, AND I COULDNT GET INTO WlLEY TO PLAY MORNING COLORS. So I RAN TO THE BAND ROOM AND GRABBED MY TRUMPET, AND PLAYED THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER ALONE. CLASSES WERE INTERRUPTED BY THE MCDO yl PHONE, AND THE SCHEDULE WAS FRANTIC. THAT EVENING I HAD TO GO AROUND AND INSPECT WATCH STATIONS WITH LCDR FeTTERMAN WHO WAS THE CDO. It TURNS OUT THAT THE BASEBALL GAME WAS RAINED OUT AS WELL, SO I STOOD THE WATCH FOR NO. REAL reason. However, the defining moment was evening colors. I was able to get riffl'd satn tolly 4 flag.
