On behalf of the Class of 2015 it is our greatest pleasure to thank the outstanding faculty and staff serving at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Each and every one of these amazing people touch Midshipmen's lives in one way or another. As a whole, you all gave us the necessary knowledge to succeed where ever life may take us. Our gratitude goes beyond words. 19 Acta Non Verba Home Away from Home Kings Point.... A place where plebes are told was the worst place to be at, but the best place to be from. While the school itself can be extremely challenging, frustrating, and downright infuriating at times, it has provided all those who pass through her gates the valuable asset of friendship and community. This book shows a snapshot of those memories and opportunities the classes of 2015 through 2018 got to experience. It represents another chapter in Kings Point history and all those associated with putting the book together are proud to have been a part of preserving the memories reflected within the following pages. - wzsl nm ssy rs OJJ 2 iWi ' -j rii£ a riXMaKP O? Having their dates dip these pieces of Academy tradition in waters from the seven seas, the class of 20IS earned a visible piece indicating seniority and passed yet another step that would lead them to graduation. From dressing up like a Santa, gingerbread man, or elf and running around New York City, or just having the traditional snowball fight between plebes and upperclassmen, there are often coundess ways to relax and let go during a day off, even if it is only perhaps a couple hours. LICENSING Whether studying on the track, in the library, at the waterfront, or even on a boat, First Class Midshipmen study hours a day during the third trimester. The Longest Week Four years, or maybe five or six depending on who you are, comes down to one week for the USCG Licensing. This exam involves a week of long, tiring, detailed tests that require midshipmen to prove they have gathered the skills and knowledge necessary to earn the vital document . allowing them to sail. It is the last hurdle and one of the hardest. Once complete, seniors can finally take a deep breath as it means graduation is just around the comer. Thanks to the hard work of faculty, staff, energy drinks, coffee, and a determined regiment 20IS had 227 midshipmen pass. After four years of hard work, countless hours of studying, sleepless nights, and tons of coffee, seniors were finally able to ring lit infamous bell. With all that stress and hard work that had built up from months of studying, this day was a huge relief. It was the i that marked a point in time where the l C were officially done with tests at Kings Point. However, it marked a bright beginnk because their next step was to earn the tide of Kings Point Alumni which would only take a few more days. t First Classmen pose for a group photo after they learned that they passed license and rang the bell. With seniors passing license, 2nd class finishing up their last trimester as underclassmen, 3rd class preparing to go to sea, and plebes celebrating their accomplishment of surviving their first year at the academy, everyone's esprit de corps soars sky high, and it all comes to an end on this night! It may be a huge relief, but the class's leadership will never stop It continues as its members join the armed forces and maritime industry as officers. They will continually be under the watchful eye of those above and below them. Additionally, they know that their actions and words will always have consequences but on this day, the class of 2015 let loose; and the pool jump ensued. This year a new tradition was started to somewhat balance a formal change of command ceremony and the informal one that all of the first class love during graduation weekend. In late May, the Regiment held a formal parade to present the class of 2016 officers to the Superintendent and to perform one last pass in review . Dressed in khakis, the upcoming 2016 leaders were formally announced for the first time. However, this ceremony was by no means as exciting as the final ceremony where over 200 soon to be graduates of the Academy sprinted into the pool and by some miracle avoided injury in the process. Weekends in the park are a time honored tradition that every Kings Pointer knows all too well. Midshipmen from the class of 2015 pose plebe year outside of Melville Hall. Their friendships last to this day. 44 A Bond That Will Never Be Broken ■ From concerts to sailings, Kings Pointers go through incredible adventures together and as a result, have memories that are guaranteed to last for a lifetime. Most plebes show up on day zero without having any idea what they are getting in to, or who they will be getting into it with. However, as any Midshipman or graduate will tell you, after graduating from Kings Point, every Alumni is a part of the biggest fraternity in the world. No organization is more diversified in their endeavors both in a career sense as well as a geographical one. Throughout the world, there are Kings Pointers living in almost every country and somehow, you always run across them at the most opportune moments. However, the people that graduates really hold a special connection with their own classmates and people that they personally knew while at the Academy. Graduates have been by the sides of their fellow alumni in both the best and worst of times. There are very few things that one class member will not do for another. From places to stay or live at after graduation, to treating you to a dinner or drinks at the local pub. Once you graduate you are guaranteed to be a part of a network that is as time honored as the seagoing services are. The title of alumni and the bonds that go with it are not easy to get, and that is exactly the reason why friendships established at Kings Point truly last a lifetime. 45 I Candidates participate in a rowing competition during the final day of plebe indoctrination. The contest, held against other platoons, consists of an eight person team led by a first class waterfront trainer that attempts to row a course in the fastest time. Candidates attend a mandatory morning PT session every morning at 0500. Often the sunrises go unnoticed because of the RAO's motivation (Right) A plebe rushes to assemble his platoon's guidon after eating dinner in Delano Hall. A privilege earned half way through indoctrination, the guidon is held by the most motivated candidate in each platoon. 46 Indoctrinati Say, Bye to Mom and Dad! From the second you say goodbye to your parents and walk into the United States Merchant Marine Academy's gym for in-processing, one world is left behind and a new one begins. Your parents may have helped get you into the Academy, but it is based solely on your own motivation and dedication on whether you make it through the rigorous four years let alone the indoctrination period. While many moments of indoctrination may seem like some of the hardest times you have ever been through, others will quickly become lifelong memories and in all honesty, some can be fun. The most valuable asset indoctrination provides is the lifelong friendships between the candidates that are quickly and rapidly submerged into a militaristic culture. Above all, self-motivation is the biggest determining factor of a midshipman's success within the regiment. In the words of Captain Bob Destafney, candidates and midshipmen alike just have to be damn proud to be here. We are your Parents Now! (Left) Candidates stare at 12 o'clock on their plates during an indoc meal. In addition, the candidates must also be seated at attention . Vii i 51 Reese Grahowski ITS THOMBMSS Every Thursday in Land Hall at the US Merchant Marine Academy, a group of dedicated parents bring counties l',r; cookies that are donated and fed to midshipmen throughout the Regiment. Cookie Angels and different parent se associations sign-up to donate the treats in order to better manage the extreme demand for cookies. By son Hr miracle, the cafe almost never runs out despite the well known fact that almost every midshipman has to make: r--;s least one trip to the midshipman pub and load up on a huge plate to bring back to their room. 52 lile the tradition of running to get cookies is most popular with plebes because they aren't allowed to have any : eets that don't come directly out of the world famous Delano Hall, midshipmen, faculty, staff, parents, and even :: :: mirals take part in this tradition every single week. Started by Carol Guest in 2007, the act of bringing cookies to t : ike the Academy feel a little bit more like home has spiraled into a full on scheduled event that is guaranteed to ng a smile to anybody that attends. 53 B ■ 1 1 .. OR HARDLY WORKING? From the RC and the Reg Wedge to the senior midshipmen in the company staff, there are multiple first classmen that take lead positions in regimental parades. Usually only performed in the spring, summer and fall, there is typically at least one parade a trimester that requires after school marching practice, something midshipmen around the academy love -ha. Running the plebe indoctrination in July every year is the first real leadership test for every upperclassman. Being responsible for a platoon of 20- 30 plebes is a huge task that is not taken lightly by the training staff. (Above) The cannon squad fires off bid ” shotgun rounds as the Regiment of Midship™ renders honors to Rear Admiral Helis, USM ....... during one of the years formal parades. Midshipmen belonging to the EMT squadron at Kings Point pose for a photo during one of their Indoctrination training sessions. The EMT program is optional for those students who want to participate but after joining and graduating from training, members often get calls to respond to anything from blister checks to heat stroke cases, extreme dehydration or other serious injury. umiing the Regiment: One Step at a Time 1 en from the day that a candidate reports on day zero of i doc, it is often times the dreams of a junior midshipman to in -me regard earn the chance to lead the Regiment. However is only after 3 seemingly endless years of training that an iderclassman can dream of being truly in charge of a .rticular activity, company, regimental program, or even a igiment of Midshipmen. After an often extensive interview ocess during the end of a midshipman's 2nd class year, ch rising first classman is assigned a particular duty for the xt year. These positions can range anywhere from being a dshipman ensign (zombo) to being in charge of the Honor ard, logistics and supplies, or even the waterfront. any midshipman or alumni will tell you, there is often a :gimental billet for each midshipman that wants it. Each w group of first classmen finds their own ways to contribute their job and to attempt to improve the Regiment and it's Dgrams. As a result, the Academy often changes with time e to improved technology, and new ideas from fresh minds, ese jobs are often a great way to instill leadership values rfore commissioning at the end of the year but at the same ?ie improve life at the Academy one year at a time. The Regiment is led onto the football field at the United States Coast Guard Academy during the annual football game. USCGA being Kings Point's main sports rival, hosts the annual game every other year, an event so huge that the entire regiment is bussed to the New London campus. A waterfront Indoctrination officer steers his boat into the Kings Point basin during an annual race amongst each platoon at the end of Indoc. Often a day meant more to celebrate the end of 19 long days, the races serve an educational purpose as well by putting nautical knowledge learned during to the test. These seas aim seem to be their own world and there is no place in the world more desolate or open than them. The also offers its share of challenges but like anything in life. Merchant Mariners take it all in. I'Mm and...Working Hard While many aspects of going out to sea change such as the people you work with, or the types of ships and routes that one sails on, the work at sea never changes. It's often some of the most physically and mentally demanding work that only a mariner can appreciate. From crawling in bilges or an MSD ( marine sanitation device) system to going aloft, there's never an easy day of work on deck or in the engine room. 65 orrest Swift ILD ORCHID 67 From sea to Shining Sea We are prepared for this While many midshipmen view particular classes and labs at the Academy chances to take an extra nap, the experiences and knowledge gained while attending these classes is often indispensable when a cadet is getting ready to go out to sea for the first time. Every day out at sea is different, and different situations call for different skills or tricks of the trade in order to complete a task. Thankfully, due to the amazing sea stories and knowledge offered by the professors at the Academy, cadets rarely go to sea unprepared in even one area of expertise. These quality classes, labs, and experiences are just one more asset that nobody has access to except for fellow Kings Pointers. 69 1 I SEASON RECORD 09 06 14 Apprentice- Away- Win 23-19 09 13 14 Coast Guard- Away- Loss 42-31 09 20 14 SUNY Maritime- Home-Win 34-17 09 27 14 Hobart- Away- Loss 42-7 10 04 14 Rensselaer- Home- Loss 45-14 10 11 14 Rochester (N.Y)- Home- Loss 20-17 10 18 14 Springfield- Away- Loss 48-21 10 25 14 WPI-Home- Loss 24-23 11 08 14 Union- Away- Loss 59-32 11 15 14 St. Lawrence- Home- Loss 42-13 ROSTER 1- Siene' De Veau, 2-Luke Stidham, 3-Sam 0'Donnel, 5-Andrew Harmon, 6-Skyler Stone, 7-Robert Moore, 8-Collin Putnam,J Devar Jones, 11-Matthew McDaniels, 14-LukeTiefethaler, 16-Colin Wenstrom, 17-Kristopher Meyer, 18-Harris Constant, 19- Eric Rainear, 20-Patrick Keyes, 24- Spencer Blauw, 25-Joshua Cann, 26-Aaron Rice, 27-Christopher Morrow-Kilroy, 28-Dario Delgado, 29-Patrick Rice, 32-Colin Hinchey, 34-Matthew Jernigan, 37-Mario Colangelo, 38-Marcus Kitchin, 39-Dylan Crook 40-Zachary Boucher, 41-Jacob Murphy, 43-Charles Helms, 44-lsaac Lee, 45-Thomas Bixler, 46-Quinn McCuan, 47-Dillon Reaves, 48-Justin Sydlowski, 49-Josh Woodburn, 50-Joeseph Castellano, 51-Kyle Carmody, 52-Matthew Dunaway, 53- Hayden Frey, 54-Michael Thorne, 55-Christian Gates, 56-Patrick McCorvey, 57-Taylor Sulik, 58-Anthony Gonzalez, 60-Natl Downs, 65- Matthew Dudo, 66-Robert Heyward, 67-Shaun Meehan, 68-Andrew Hendrix, 70-lan Stoner, 71-Parker Johnson 73-Preston Hall, 74- Courtland Watters, 76-John Gorman, 78-Jacob Margery, 80-Ben 0'Donnel, 81-Jack 0'Donnel, 82-Nichola Burke, 83-Erik Thompson, 84-Phillip Espinoza, 85-Robert Baker, 86-Patrick Higgins, 88-Michael Hutchinson, 89-William Marino, 90-Ty Soobitsky, 91-Alex Shiber, 92-Cody Fields, 94-Thomas Siegharter, 95-Jacob Hill, 96-Sean McDonough, 97 Patrick Whalen, 98-Erik Swayne, 99-Daniel Kennedy M 72 his season the USMMA Men’s soccer team came together to complete a successful 2015 season. The team • rsevered, through many overtime matches, and banded together to earn themselves a spot in the conference als. However, a team’s win loss record does not define the players that make up the team. -Kyle Arestivo COMMENTS : i team has a heart, a soul, and a chemistry that must be efully balanced, blended together, and built over a length of le. To properly mix a team, it takes tremendous and isistent leadership. That is exactly what the class of 2015 :cer players provided for the USMMA men's soccer team, roughout their four years on the team the class of 2015 tivated an atmosphere that developed great players as well great people. Our soccer careers ended, but the people we :ome will last a lifetime. For that the class of 2015 will be nembered. For that they will be missed. Kyle Arestivo A 73 Volleyball I think everyone can agree that KP Women's Volleyball is one of the best sports teams on campus. The team was amazing and so fun to watch! We held our own in conference this year and nearly beat USCGA, with a record that far surpassed that of previous years. Hopefully all members of the team were as positively impacted by the program as I was, meeting some of the greatest friends and getting to play beside them. Also, credit is definitely due to the midshipmen that came and cheered us on and supported us! Founded by Captain Joe Prosser in 1965, the Waterfront has been established as a first-class program teaching midshipmen the fundamentals of small-craft boat handling. Currently the Kings Point Dinghy Team, Offshore Team, Crew, and Power Squadron introduce midshipmen to the unique environment of the sea and provides a platform for professional and character development. i 9: (left) Pictured (L-R): Brendan Wright Eve Watterson, Sheridan Jonesjand I Wardlaw Skinner Come Sail Away It is not down on ary map, true places never are -Herman Melville OFFSHORE SAILING neatly to tacK! Cohan's Own As esteemed members of the Regiment of Midshipmen, the United States Merchant Marine Academy Band is often called upon to represent the Academy at public events such as parades in New York City, formal dinners, memorials, and even presidential inaugurations. These extracurricular events as well as the rehearsals required of them, piled on top of school work often allow Midshipmen in Band Company to form a very close and almost indescribable bond since they are constantly working together. Under the direction of Captain Kenneth Force, USMS and Midshipman Matthew Homeier, 1 C, the band practiced constantly every morning during the summer months, a time of day that (almost) every Midshipman looked forward to with a smile on their face. Some members of Band Company say what they love most is being able to live in the same barracks together, something that no other organization or team has the capability to do. This only adds to the friendships and bonds that these students all form together. With their consistently squared away uniforms, mirror shined shoes, and sometimes extremely motivated Band Masters, this group of Midshipmen is sure to give any passer-by a great smile. The club did numerous service projects within the Kings point community. In addition, the club visited Long Island's Seminary school to attend mass and play dodge ball against other Newman clubs. The Midshipman regularly took TM's to go on catholic retreats to reflect on their faith. The 2014-15 Club President was Midshipman Thomas George, 1 C. TOP 10 Christian Songs-2015 1. All of these projects were great opportunities for the midshipmen to apply their engineering and logistics education while mentoring the new members. The year's highlight was hosting of the first ever Auto Show on Kings Point campus - it went off without a hitch. Close to one hundred cars attended from around Long Island and the surrounding areas. There was also an incredible turnout from midshipman, staff and local New Yorkers to see the cars and learn about the Academy. Not only was the show an incredible way for the midshipmen to apply the leadership skills learned from the regiment, it also employed their engineering and logistics education. The show received positive reviews from all attendants and was hopefully the first of many. President - Paul Styx, 106 idiot Squad Kings Point Midshipmen are known around the world as being the worlds most refined Ladies and Gentlemen. From the floor of the Senate to the International Space Station to captains of vessels around the world, Kings Pointers represent the best of the best... most of the time. They also know how to relax, have fun and cheer on their favorite Mariners sports team. Dressing up and yelling is just part of the experience of being a Kings Pointer. And don't forget to do those push ups for the football team! I 107 If you can't stand the heat_____ Each team consisted of a nozzleman, a backup, and a hose handler. It is necessary for every midshipman to complete both an introductory as well as an advanced firefighting course during their time at the Academy. The instructors truly gear the curriculum towards fighting shipboard fires which is vital to survival out at sea. It really prepares midshipman to effectively and quickly react to various types of fires and hazards that sailors could face on any day. When in the face of fire one can only imagine how they will react. Going through this course was not only fun but a great team building exercise as midshipmen literally stepped into flames with each other. I 109 Reg. Comander 1st Rotation: Nicholas Harvey First Rotation was the most challenging, stressful, and rewarding eight months of my life. Going from being a nobody 2nd Classmen to the guy the rest of the school was looking to for answers, was about as abrupt an awakening as LCDR Roth blasting Reveille on a Monday morning. But I quickly learned that a lot of us felt that way; and relying on the help of Rebecca, Emily, Lynae, and Antonio was going to be the only way to get through the next few months. RC taught me above all “people skills.” It forced me to interact with a lot of people. I saw myself as the middleman between my peers, the regiment, and the Commandant, and it took some time to build the relationship to a point where I could walk into the Commandants Office, ask him to cancel a march on a football game or a Reg. Period, and expect not to get kicked out. Or more importantly, come back to my peers with bad news and try to keep everyone onboard. I can’t speak for everyone else on the Reg Staff, but I know I left feeling a little battered, and although I don’t know if I’ll ever miss it, I can say without a doubt I was glad I gave it shot. I made some of the best friends at Kings Point; and my time as Regimental Commander strengthened some of those bonds and built some new ones. Nicholas D. Harvey MIDN CAPT (ret) 1 Reg. Comander 2nd Rotation: Jerrick Sablan As 2nd Rotation RC, I have learned a lot about myself and about the midshipmen that I served. I had a successful rotation thanks to Nick Harvey, who set 2nd rotation up for success. There were many goals for the 2nd rotation staff but not much time. I was very proud of the Regiment partaking in a mustache fund raising event for Angela’s House which raised money for the continued support of medically frail children. Service Dress Fridays became a thing during my time as RC. This gave the 1 C an opportunity to learn how to wear the uniforms of the services that they planned to be commissioned in. As RC, I had the greatest staff that always had my back and I would gladly serve with you guys in any capacity in the future. To the regiment, it was my honor and pleasure to serve you and the best damn Service Academy in this great country. That is all, carry on. Oooooh what a day, what a lovely day. We have finally completed the journey of 1000 miles that is Kings Point. It is a great honor to stand here today with the members of the class of 2015 while I am also disheartened at the loss of those who fell from our ranks throughout the four year struggle and for those of us still at sea. We stand here on the precipice of our careers and the enduring struggle of ensuring compliance with MAR AD. On this day, we emerge from the furnace. We have been forged in the fire of Kings Point's 170+ credit curriculum, ruthless regimental lifestyle, and horrors of Delano. And to clarify, to forge is a verb that means to make or shape a metal object by heating it in a fire or furnace and beating or hammering it. I think it accurately describes our time at this academy. We came from across the country from small towns and big cities, we were individuals who chose to take the path less traveled and I must say that has made all the difference. That group from four years ago is not the same group of people that I stand before today. I look into this class and I see Kings Point Alumni with a passion for personal values, an unmatched transportable skill set and the steadfast capability to get the job done. The Kings Point faculty has dragged us these past four years through kicking and screaming but in the end, we thank them. You imparted a remarkable skill set onto us and honed our problem solving capability. Thanks to you, the engineers can confidently operate, design, and maintain propulsion plant machinery while deckies have developed an unparalleled navigational and logistical expertise. At this time, we must not forget the parents who have raised the most honorable, compassionate, and selfless people that I have had the privilege to attend this academy with. I am humble to be in your presence and to have been surrounded by the great people you have produced. II J I t Together, we endured and overcame the challenges from our indoctrination to license, while experiencing many unique leadership styles along the way. We owe our success to each other for picking each other up, for the good times that we have shared, and for updating the section page. 134 We have all made our mistakes, like the time I through out everyone's clothes during indoctrination. That was a bad day. Through countless days where we worked on deck, in bilges, or at KP, we have learned to work day in and day out. In my experiences at KP, I adopted a mentality that it as a good day if you go to bed exhausted or if you didn't go to bed at all. In that regard, I would say that we have all had a lot of good days. Some of my other takeaways from KP are that the best cure for worry is action, that no sea is too rough, and sometimes in life to get the thing you want the most, you have to give up everything else. We have invested ourselves entirely into this school and we have earned our success. Any class that comes through this academy is defined by their plebe year. In that regard, we have a unique reputation but we didn’t let people’s perception of us impact our attitude or performance. One such example, just because you get three class one offenses for kicking a hat doesn't mean you can't become the valedictorian. I think something we all learned is that, the soul that is within you no man can degrade. On this day, we disembark from the place that made us great. You all embody what it means to be a Kings Pointer, you have the self-driven discipline and leadership potential. We are now prepared to go out into the industry and the military and get the job done. When I did my overnight visit to Kings Point, I was with the plebe who took me to class, meals, and let me sleep on the floor while he studied for a test. The only thing I remember being told was that I should and I quote, Put this place in my rear view mirror and never look back . After that delightful experience, I knew this was the place for me. At Kings Point everyday was a challenge and we survived. Speech written by: Michael Francis Valedictorian,2015 135 Ships Sailed: M V Integrity, T-AO 204 Rappahannock, T-AKE 4 Richard E. Lastly, a big shout out to my mom, Midge Silk, who took over my job while I was out to sea. She too put in countless hours and without her help, the book would have taken even longer to produce. I feel blessed to have worked with such great and selfless people. It’s been a, long road but the friends we made at the Academy make all those tirelesg.bpurs of studying worth it. •’Maiy’Silk ....... jyfj - • Chi f Editor •■--j -k - k Mdships2015 , f UBidhil SEAMEN NEEDED TRAIN FOR Deck Department Engine Department ISteward’s Department Radio Operator Asst.
