Spirit Mission Lore: Back in the 1960âs, a group of plebes carried one of the old wooden monomoys up to the balcony of Wiley Hall. During the portage up the steps inside, one of the plebes slipped and the monomoy was dropped on the stairs. The crack that was left in the step that took the weight of the fall can still be seen today. Missions Spirit Missions are an important morale booster at Kings Point. The upperclass love it when they wake up in the morning for breakfast and the Plebes have drug a boat up from the waterfront and placed it on the grinder. Often many special events require the plebes to pull off a spirit mission. Examples are Luau, Ring Dance, Coast Guard weekend, and 9 11. Above: Part of the Spirit Mission, decora the gun in the oval. (watch it on youtube) 40 Cookie Cafe Cookie Cafe is what keeps us going, a special event that happens every Thursday afternoon at Kings Point. All are invited to Cookie Cafe in Land Hall. It all started in September of 2007 when one Thursday afternoon Carol Guest, wife of Gene Guest KP '66, brought some supplies to Land Hall and started making cookies for Midshipmen. She started doing this every Thursday, and in a few months, a third of the school was coming by Land Hall for cookies. Along the way, the Parents' Associations began to help out and now in 2013 over three quarters of the Midshipmen and many of the faculty will come to Cookie Cafe every Thursday. Cookie Cafe is often the highlight of many a Midshipman's week. 41 -Anonymous First Classmen USCG License Exams 28th-31 st of May, 2013 The dreaded Coast Guard License Exam is the most trying and difficult task because from the time we are plebes to the last months of senior year, we all know that graduation is pendent on passing seven very difficult tests. The entire last trimester of our life at Kings Point is wrapped up in studying for it. But through all the trials, the class of 2013 pressed on to achieve a first time passing average better then any of their counterparts in the state maritime schools. The Class of 2013 enjoyed many nights, and days, at the Midshipman Pub! Spencer Fletcher, Nick Cemy and the Midshipman Council made this dream come true. They collected all kinds of memorabilia to redecorate Land Hall. The outcome was great! The Pub Masters, Max Rowland and Ethan Schmidt served their classmates proudly. They spent countless hours keeping the Pub running smoothly. It was always nice at the end of a long day of academic and regimental worries to come and enjoy the company of your friends at the pub. J Psalm 107:23-32 (esv) Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; they saw the deeds of the Lord, his wondrous works in the deep. For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; they reeled and staggered like drunken men i and were at their witsâ end. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love. for his wondrous works to the children of man! After experiencing an almost complete collapse of the school newspaper in 2011-2012, Hear This, known for the past 70 years as the Voice of the Regiment, saw a huge revamp in 2012-2013. Due, in part, to the meticulous management and military-esque leadership of Chief Editor, Sung Hyong, the solid effort of the talented staff, and inspiration, direction, and prodding from club advisors. Dr. Jacques Szaluta and CDR Raymond Gardner, the newspaper club was able to publish 6 editions during the year. The goal of the staff for each issue was to gather a spread of articles to cater to the variety of interests of the readership on campus, while offering an intelligent critique from the midshipmen's perspective on the Academy issues of the day. Notable articles included an insightful interview of our new Commandant, Captain Kennedy, in Commandant: Friend Or Foe , comparisons of other Academies with How We Stack Up and Conversations With A Cal Maritime Deckie , and a discourse from Professor Taffet on the long-used term, Zombo, in The iMeaning of Zombo . The newspaper club would like to thank the midshipmen and faculty contributors for the amazing articles, poems, pictures, and jokes they submitted, the Commandant's Department for assistance in getting our pages to the press, and all of the readers. The band's everyday function at school is playing the National Anthem for Colors in the morning; however, the band also performs in many events. The highlight of this academic year was marching in the 2013 Inaugural Parade The band also put on two performances of Beat Retreat, performed for the New York Auto Show, and marched in the Great Neck Memorial Day Parade. The team was just as excited as our fans when game after game the Mariners continued to win over teams they had struggled against in the beginning two seasons. The Mariners were led by Captains, John Homola (Club President) and Matt Finlayson, and Assistant Captains, Steve Garger and Pat McCabe, to finish 4th in the Metropolitan Hockey Conference with a 12-win, 2-loss record in league play, qualifying for a playoff berth. The team played County College of Morris in the first round of playoffs with a loss of 7-4. Highlights of the season included beating Coast Guard 5-2 at their home rink in the first annual edition of the Ice Hockey Commandantâs Cup and getting the chance to play West Point for the first time. The team owes much of its success to the dedication of Coaches Bob Plansker (KP '88), Jason Leavy, and Joe Bosnack. 97 Women's Soccer The Women's Soccer team is only just starting to pick up traction at Kings Point. Hopefully in the future the team will be able to break out of club status and become part of the Landmark Conference. 98 KP Spirit Brigade Kings Point doesn't have a cheerleader squad for good reason.
