The one thing the midshipmen thought would never go away, hot water in the barracks has become scarce so midshipmen have to shower in O'Hara hall. Hard, USMS USN (Ret.) Class of ‘62 Kings Point Staff Faculty since 1966 Class of 1962 Remembrance of Kings Point Passing through Victory Gate on a hot, humid August day in 1958 was like entering another world .... one of wearing uniforms, marching, plebe beats, staying out of trouble to avoid demerits (and Class Rates), and meeting new classmates from all over the country. Truly an eye opening and learning experience. When the upperclassmen returned to the Academy, life as a Cadet became even more hectic and intolerable. We began to learn about ships and the sea. along with a good dose of humanities, science, math and engineering. The hardest part about attending classes was keeping awake, especially those where the instructors droned in monotones on subject matters that did not seem interesting. We were on our way to becoming the captains and chief engineers of the future. Unfortunately some of our classmates fell by the wayside, due to academic problems or not being able to endure the life as a Cadet. Plebe year seemed like it would never end. Sea year was an eye opening experience for us all. It was a “growing-up” period and we benefited immensely from the experience. It opened our eyes to the many different cultures, countries and life that existed in the world, and we learned what going to sea was all about. Sea year was a valued learning experience that could never be taught in a class room .... a true highlight of the Kings Point experience. The world indeed was our campus! Second class year became more of a focus on academics and ensuring that ones’ GPA was satisfactory to remain at the Academy. By second class year. Kings Point grew on you. Besides academics, life at the Academy centered on the special friendships and bonds that were forming among our fellow section mates, roommates and team mates First class year was the best of all .... we were king of the hill! We could see the light at the end of the tunnel, and were looking forward to graduation and taking on the world. Deciding on what we wanted to do after graduation was easy for most of us. Some wanted to sail, enter the Navy, work in the maritime industry or go on to graduate school. Unlike many college students, the decision for our future had been made for us during our years at Kings Point. It has been fifty years since our graduation in July 1962 and it is hard to believe how fast the time has gone. It is amazing to learn what our classmates have achieved and accomplished over the years in both maritime and non-maritime fields. For all of us it all started at Kings Point, and being a graduate of the Academy is the major first achievement of each midshipman. As a graduate of the Class of 2012 you have a bright future in front of you and each of you can expect to accomplish many more significant achievements over your careers. Treasure the bonds of friendship you have made during the past four years as they are friendships for life. To the class of 2012 we are proud of your accomplishments and welcome you as fellow alumni to support the Academy, its staff, midshipman and to ensure that Kings Point does indeed become the jewel of the academies! COUNO 39 - As a long thursday schedule of classes slowly passes by and Midshipman eagerly try to keep their eyes open, others eagerly wait for Cookie Cafe to t open its doors to provide them with sweet treats provided by parents and volunteers from all over the nation. A highlight of every Midshipman's . day, Cookie Cafe often provides a relaxed enviomment in which Midshipman, Faculty, and Staff, can come and enjoy cookies, rice crispy treats, i other sweet goodies, and drinks for as long as they want. “Its nice to be able to chill out after a long day of classes and nothing beats home made • cookies!” (Midshipman Brittain) Being that Land Hall was closed for the better part of this year due to renovations, the event was held in several places including the room next to Babson Center, as well as Topside Dining Hall, and Yocum Sailing Center. However, no matter where the location is, the program always has a big turnout as Mrs. Cunningham, along with parent volunteers, decorate and set up the event every week. 4 Midshipman Miller from 4th Company enjoys a cookie made by the Abel family. Parents from all over the country send cookies and sweets of all types. Midshipman Broskus prepares to take a bite out of a cookie made by the Abel family. The Abel family is known for making and sending dozens of cookies every week. M N Hogan of 4th Company carefully eyes what types of sweets she wants. After examining the variety, it is very difficult to just take one cookie. 41 ■ 'tt mm i 1 I Kill. mmsrm I m m- i Dinners While civilians at home have just finished their high school careers and are beginning to have a summer of relaxation and fun. Candidates to the United States Merchant Marine Academy have just begun their indoctrination into the Academy. As these 18 and 19 year olds say goodbye TO their families for three months, they mentally prepare for something that most of them have never been through; a rigorous, two and a half week course of military discipline, shooting, sailing, aquatic survival, and other classes. This year, 294 specially chosen Candidates reported, and chose to begin a new life with exciting new career opportunities that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. However, not all of the participants for Indoc are inexperienced in a military lifestyle. The drill instructors, waterfront trainers, and OICs for the class of 2015 gave up most of their summer to learn how to train the leaders of the future. Depending on what program these workers chose to pursue, they went through leadership and physical fitness courses, as well as sailing and waterfront training programs to prepare them for their upcoming teaching experiences. While Indoc, for many, is a challenge, when the two and a half week training period comes to an end, regular civilians have come to learn leadership characteristics and values that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. As Candidates take their first steps into the doors and prepare to get weighed in, OICs, commissioned officers, and volunteers attempt to get paperwork and data organized. A platoon of candidates makes their way to a swimming class. Swimming classes were often looked forward to by the Candidates because it gave them a chance to get clean and cool off at the same time. On the last day of Indoc, a monomoy race was held in which each platoon raced each other. While the race was close, it provided one last step of team building before the academic year starts. 47 HAUS EN Wait how did Gargiulo get on this page Don't Worry only one goldfish was harmed in the making of this Yearbook Guess this is one way Keeping Warm at the Park, Most prefer the fire water DAS BOOTS Struggles, Most of us have had one(or moi These Nights l-LJS Vt yj E J. w n n v LAX ZOMBS and Mel They're not Filled with School Spirit but Liquid Spirits Serious Studying at Beach Some Zombos have class... Favorite KP Memory: There are way too many favorite memories to just name one, from the times with my section, sea year, and of the nights out with great friends. Since I only have this much room, I will never forget all of the crazy times with Christina Betancourt. It made every moment at this Academy into a more liveable and entertaining one, restriction and all. “I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.” Marilyn Monroe r. a U-' 1 195 FERNANDO GALVAN Marine Engineering and Shipyard Management Hometown: Panama City, Panama Company: 3rd Officer Billets: Zombo Clubs Sports Activities: Weight Training Ships Sailed: MV Maersk Montana, MV Alliance Charleston, SS Horizon Spirit Sea Partners: Matthew Roque Countries Visited: Oman, Pakistan, U.A.E., Kuwait, Iraq, India, Saudi Arabia, - and the U.S. Internship: Braswell Shipyards, S.A., - Panama Future Plans: Work a bit, grad school, open a bar restaurant in Panama, and most importantly, continue smiling at life. Favorite KP Memory: I can still remember how unbelievably happy and excited I was when 1 found out I was accepted. That still ranks up there with the best for sure. I think another of my favorite moments was when I tried on my dress ring for the very' first time. It was incredible and surreal to realize that it was, in fact, my senior year. We are extremely proud of all your accomplishments, such as surviving Indoc, earning your gold star, and earning a medal for Outstanding Achievement on the USNS Pecos. And lets not forget the places you got to visit, which included snow skiing in the mall in Dubai, visiting East and South Africa and going on a safari, touring India and Pakistan, traveling through pirate infested waters, touching the lives of orphans in Thailand, and experiencing an earthquake and the nuclear meltdown while in Japan. All the while, we were at home discovering new and innovative ways to stay in touch with you and your ship as we spent countless hours tracking it on AIS. Watching the home football games and getting to know your football friends and their families was always great fun! And of course after the game, which became a Saturday night tradition starting from our very first visit, was a great steak at Peter Lugers, where they knew us by name.
