You have now joined a very special and select group: the alumni of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. You have earned your designation as Kings Point alumni by successfully completing a rigorous and demanding program. During your years at the Academy, you have worked together to reach your goals and to make Kings Point the very best. I am proud of your achievements and offer you a sincere Well Done. Dedication: Joe Kass The editors of 2005 Midships are pleased to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Joe Kass of the Department of Engineering. He arrived at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1974 and has been not only an excellent instructor, but a friend as well to many midshipmen over the years. After service in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Kass took a position at the Academy. He was soon promoted to Engineering Lab Instructor. He subsequently earned a degree in Mechanical Technology at the City College ofNew York During this period he assumed the duties of Assistant Instructor Technician in the welding lab, a position he has maintained to this day. During the course of his career at Kings Point, Mr. Kass has received awards as the American Welding Society’s Educator of the Year (2002 and 2003); the U.S. Department of Transportation Bronze Medal; and selection by the Class of2004 as Non-T enured Instructor of the Y ear. He and his wife Deborah have two daughters. Mr. Kass says: “I would like to express my deep and heartfelt thanks and appreciation for being recognized in the 2005 yearbook. Words cannot express how much this means to me. It has truly been an honor and pleasure to teach and work with the Class of2005 over the last fouryears. I congratulate all the members of the class and wish them the very best during life’sjoumey. Mayyouryearsallbe as rewarding as mine.” Mr. Joe Kass (right) receives an award from the Academic Dean, Dr. Warren Mazek. 21
