You now join the ranks of generations of Merchant Marine officers who have served our great Nation in both times of peace and times of war. As head of the U.S. Department of Transportation, I am proud of every one of you. As Kings Pointers, you have learned the principles of duty, excellence and sacrifice through a challenging curriculum, a demanding year at sea, and the invaluable knowledge handed down to you from talented, dedicated and experienced instructors. This foundation will ensure that your future careers will be promising and fulfilling, no matter the challenges that lie ahead. Your maritime skills, paired with your lessons in teamwork, will help you weather any storm. As you head into the seas of change, always remember the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s motto: Acta Non Verba - deeds, not words. Armed with this phrase, you cannot go wrong. THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON May 2, 2005 I send greetings and congratulations to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Class of 2005. The advance of freedom has great momentum in our time, and we are witnessing landmark events in the history of liberty. We have a respon- sibility to future generations to leave them an America that is safe from danger and protected by peace. As your class assumes new duties and responsibilities in the coming years, you will be called upon to help ensure the security of our Nation through the forward march of freedom. I commend graduates for your discipline and commitment to excellence. I am confident that you will make great contributions to our country. Your graduation is also a tribute to your instructors, and I applaud them for their skill and dedication. Laura and I send our best wishes.
