THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON May 18,2004 Congratulations to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Class of2004. During this time of great consequence, the Merchant Marines' service to America is more important than ever. As the United States leads an international coalition against terrorism, we depend on our maritime services to ensure our security, protect our interests, and advance the universal hope of freedom. As graduates of the Merchant Marine Academy, you will play a vital role in providing support for our military efforts at home and around the world. Your valuable contributions will also strengthen our economy through your work in the maritime and transportation industries. Our Nation is grateful for your willingness to serve with our Armed Forces. May God bless you, and may God continue to bless the United States of America and all who defend her. 17

i s THE SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20590 April 23, 2004 To the Class of 2004 Congratulations on your graduation! You now join the ranks of generations of Merchant Marine officers who have served our great Nation in both times of peace and times of war. As your service secretary, I am very proud of every one of you. I would like to extend a special thanks to those who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. As Kings Pointers, you have learned the principles of duty, excellence and sacrifice through a challenging curriculum, a demanding year at sea, and the invaluable knowledge handed down to you from talented, experienced instructors. This foundation will ensure that your future careers will be strong, no matter the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Your engineering and navigational skills, paired with your lessons in teamwork, will help you weather any storm. As you head into the seas of change, always remember the Merchant Marine Academy motto: acta non verba - deeds not words - and you cannot go wrong. It is comforting to know that the Merchant Marine Academy continues to graduate men and women of the highest caliber. Stand proud, stand strong as America’s “fourth arm of defense.” On behalf of President Bush and the American people, I salute you. Travel safely. God bless each and every one of you, and may God continue to bless the United States of America. Sincerely yours, Norman K. M neta
