The third word that appears on the base of the Mariners' Monument is “courage. This is a value close to the heart of Kings Pointers. Courage was in great supply Courage Class president Casey Dexter (below) presents SEN John Handy with a crystal bowl in appreciation for his visit to Kings Point. with the first cadet-midshipmen of Kings Point. They went to sea during World War II, facing attacks from aircraft and submarines, sailing in all theaters of operations around the globe. As every plebe learns, 142 students lost their lives in enemy action. The Battle Standard Dinner is a visible symbol that today celebrates the tradition of “the 142. Vet again in the Korean War, and in the Vietnam War and the first Gulf War, Kings Pointers played an important role in the sealift to far away places. As this yearbook is being prepared, midshipmen are sailing on vessels bound for Afghanistan and Iraq. The value of courage goes beyond the battlefield, where it is found perhaps in its purest form. Courage lives in the mariner who faces stormy running seas, or on the playing field, when the athlete ignores pain and fatigue to give his or her best. The fourth and final word that given automatically. It is no coincidence that “respect appears last in the four regimental values. The words that precede it on the monument, integrity, courage and service, are all respect. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy has earned respect in the maritime community, both nationally and internationally, by adhering to its pinciples. Its graduates have demonstrated integrity and have shown courage and service in the face of adveristy, from World War II to “9-11 to Operation Iraqi Freedom. Without any one of the four Academy would stand diminished. Yet, because of its commitment to these values, it appears at the base of the Mariners' Monument is (Below) With an amazing first “Respect.
