Below: White att nSS Academy for a addresses the audience at the dinner to celebrate the USMMA's 60th Anniversary. Above: The oaths taken on Acceptance Day are a very real symbol of a midshipman s commitment to service. The second word that appears on the base of the Mariners' Monument is service. As the Superintendent of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, VAbM Jopseph Stewart, often says, Service is what Kings Point is all about -- service to the Nation, to the Academy, to one's classmates and shipmates, to the community outside of the Academy's gates. When the plebe candidates raise their right hands on Acceptance bay, they swear an oath of allegiance to the Academy and to the Naval Reserve, pledging their service to America. At Kings Point, midshipmen serve the Regiment as Midshipman Officers and as members of sports teams and dubs. They serve their fellow classmates daily through acts of friendship and kindness. In September 2003, the Academy celebrated its 60th Anniversary, symbolizing six decades of Kings Point's outstanding service to the Nation. Service 6

The third word that appears on the base of the Mariners' Monument is “courage. This is a value close to the heart of Kings Pointers. Courage was in great supply Courage Class president Casey Dexter (below) presents SEN John Handy with a crystal bowl in appreciation for his visit to Kings Point. with the first cadet-midshipmen of Kings Point. They went to sea during World War II, facing attacks from aircraft and submarines, sailing in all theaters of operations around the globe. As every plebe learns, 142 students lost their lives in enemy action. The Battle Standard Dinner is a visible symbol that today celebrates the tradition of “the 142. Vet again in the Korean War, and in the Vietnam War and the first Gulf War, Kings Pointers played an important role in the sealift to far away places. As this yearbook is being prepared, midshipmen are sailing on vessels bound for Afghanistan and Iraq. The value of courage goes beyond the battlefield, where it is found perhaps in its purest form. Courage lives in the mariner who faces stormy running seas, or on the playing field, when the athlete ignores pain and fatigue to give his or her best. Handy watch the entrance of the color guard at the Battle Standard Dinner. 8
