THE CLASS OF 2003 DEDICATION CAPT Douglas B. Brown The editors ans staff are pleased to dedicate 2(K)3MIDSHIPStoCAPTDouglasB. Brown, USMS of the Department of Engineering. CAPT Brwon attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he lettered in soccer, bas- ketball and track. (He still holds the USCGA track record in discus.) Graduating in 1969, he was as- signed to a Coastal In- terdiction Cutter in Vietnam. He served as a seagoing engineer for six years, and subse- quently had four tours in the USCG Marine Safety Program, where he was once assigned to the construction of two offshore oil plat- forms in Dalien. China. CAPT Brown also served as the first Coast Guard District Civil Rights Officer and had an assignment as the USCG Liaison Officer at Kings Point, 1978- 1981. After retiring from the Coast Guard after 20 years of service, CAPT Brown worked in Singapore for two years as a project engineer for the construction of two AT T cable ships. He then joined the Engineering Dept, at USMMA. Since 1991, CAPT Brown has been assistant department head and department head; has created a Marine Environmental Engineering elective; and has an exciting hydrogen pow- ered fuel cell project ongoing with midship- men. He looks after all the Marine Engineer- ing courses that are taught to the ships officer majors (and is affectionately known as Trek, the Shopper Daddy ”). CAPT Brow n, who holds a chief engineer's license, is academic advisor to the lacrosse and soccer teams. He has received the Sue Alice McNulty Aw'ard for Distinguished Teaching, and the Maritime Adminstrator’s Equal Employment Opportunity Award. He met his wife, Janet, w hen he was a Coast Guard Academy cadet- at a dance following a basketball game with the USMMA! They have two sons: Dave, who is a first classman at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and Zachary, who attends Glen Cove High School. CAPT Brown says: A sincere ’thank you” to the class of the 2003. This recognition means a great deal to me. Please do not think other- wise when I ask you to understand that you deserve an infinitaly larger share of this honor.
