THE SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20590 To the Class of 2003 Congratulations to the Class of 2003! You have successfully completed a challenging and prestigious education from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. You are now ready to take on your responsibilities as officers in the American Merchant Marine, which serves the Nation in times of war and peace. I am very proud of all of you and am confident that you will make many remarkable contributions to your country. Most Americans do not realize that the U.S. Merchant Marine is the “fourth arm of defense,” but our military and political leaders understand how important you are. We learn early on that every road to the future has its beginning somewhere in the past. The esprit de corps of Kings Pointers that is so striking to visitors doesn't come easily. It must be earned. It hails from a challenging curriculum, an arduous year at sea, and invaluable knowledge passed on from seasoned instructors. As a Kings Pointer, you can be confident that you will be in demand in any kind of job market. But, before you embark on your new adventures, I ask that you never forget your roots and the principles you learned as a midshipman: duty, excellence, and sacrifice. Your engineering and navigational skills have been tested, your ingenuity challenged, and your endurance and leadership put on trial. You are ready, I am sure, for the storms and the high seas to come. The Merchant Marine Academy motto, acta non verba - deeds not words - is one that you will embody the rest of your life. Again, congratulations, God bless you and God bless America! Fair winds.
