DEDICATION: CDR RAYMOND F. GARDNER, USMS The editors and staff are pleased to dedi- cate 2002 Midships to CDR Raymond F. Gardner, USMS of the Department of Engi- neering. CDR Gardner, a 1979 Kings Point graduate, came to the Academy four and a half years ago. He brought with him a love of engineering, the Academy, and teaching. He enthusiasti- cally helps the midshipmen with their engineer- ing studies. After graduating from Kings Point, CDR Gardner sailed for nearly six years with Dis- trict 2 MEBA AMO. He earned his First Assis- tant Engineer's license during this time. He subsequently came ashore and worked as a mechanical engineer, designing systems for the U.S. Navy. Later, he went to work as a consulting engi- neer, designing and retrofitting central power, heating and chiller plants. All the time, his Kings Point education was essential to his success. After a stint teaching at SUNY Maritime, CDR Garnder returned to his alma mater. In 1992, he passed the New York State licensed professional engineer exam. In 1995, he earned a master's degree in mechanical engi- neering from Polytechnic University in Brook- lyn. With three associates, he started a con- sulting engineering firm on Long Island. CDR Gardner fondly remembers his days as a midshipman at the Academy. It was at Kings Point that he met his wife of 22 years at a school mixer. Marianne is a dental hygienist. Together they have four children: James, Elizabeth, Emily and Sarah. “It is an honor and a privilege to teach at Kings Point, says CDR Gardner. He believes that midshipmen are hard-working, dedicated individuals who have chosen a more strenuous romance life than the typical college student.
