2001 Midships Decjic tion to Captain John Henry Hagecjorn, 05MS Captain Hagedorn grew up in Huntington, NY. He learened to love the sea by rowing his own twelve foot wooden dory all over Long Island Sound. He also developed a love ofatbletics playing football and lacrosseat Huntington High School. He graduated in 1963 and went on to the New York State Maritime College playing on the first collegiate lacrosseteam and learning an even greater love and respect for the sea. Captain Hagedorn's first ship, the R V Robert Conrad sailed the night ofgraduation and returned fourteen months later. From 1968 through 1973 he sailed on a variety of ships with MM P. In 1973 at Op Sail Captain Hagedorn was honored by the class ofl977 as a man born ofthe sea and shared that love with all of his students. The call ofthe sea returned in 1977 with him sailing as chief mate with Farrell Lines. His dedication to teaching the ways ofthe sea was shared by many Kings Point Cadets over the next 20 years. Captain Hagedorn started sailing master in 1984-. During his leave periods, Captain Hagedorn worked at 175MMA as an adjunct professorof nautical science and an instructor for USMMA Continuing education. He also worked for Marine Safety International the former opeartors of CAORF, as an instructor in Bridge Team Management. Outside the maritime field, he was a substituteteacher in Kings Park, NY. In 1996, he retired from sailing and joined the 17SMMA Marine Transportation Department as Master ofthe T V Kings Pointer. Captain Hagedorn was awarded the Department of Transportation Bronze Medal for the development ofa training program for the students who utilize the Kings Pointer. ft .rJ8 Lob It)

His real interest was giving Kings Pointersan opportunity to become better seamen and in return, he did all he could to help with sea-going positions upon graduation. Captain Hagedorn also found the time to pursue another love at Kings Point. This was to assist the lacrosse team as an academic advisor. Captain Hagedorn holds an unlimited master mariner's license and is a member of the Nautical Institute and the Council of American Masters. You will always find his door open to anyone at any time for help. He currently lives in Northport with his wife Eileen and his two sons, John and Robert. ifyou were to ask the Captain if he would like to be remembered as Captain, Coach, Teacher, etc. he will always say, A seaman.' Some people say we have angels walking the earth, we have one walking here with us at Kings Point.
