THE SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20590 To the Class of 2001 It is a pleasure to congratulate each of you on having met the high standards established for students at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. As you close this chapter of your life and embark on a new and challenging career, I invite you to reflect on what you have learned and what you have accomplished. During your time at Kings Point, you learned much about the traditions of merchant mariners and the sea. These traditions -- loyalty, diligence, comradeship, integrity and confidence in oneself — will augment and reinforce the professional skills you have acquired over the last four years. As a graduate of Kings Point, you stand ready to embark on a life's journey where you join ranks with a long line of distinguished seafarers in a proud profession. I know we can depend on you as a future maritime leader to support the continued viability of the American merchant marine. We are all counting on you to ensure that the American flag will continue to sail in the sea lanes of the world, and that America's Marine Transportation System will meet the challenges of our expanding commerce. We will trust you to carry on our nation's proud maritime heritage. I know that you will continue the Academy's spirit of service in peace and war, and I bid you fair winds and following seas. incerely yp
