America has long counted on those who engage in commerce at sea to willingly become protectors when our Nation is in peril. As our Nation's commercial and national security needs continue to change to meet the challenges of new inter- national relationships and technologies, sailors must master evolving skills while maintaining centuries-old principles of seamanship. As graduates of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, you can take considerable pride in your determination and efforts in your academic careers. You also can look forward to providing valuable service to America's economy through your work at sea. Our Nation is grateful that you stand ready to serve with our Armed Forces, the finest in the world. Best wishes for continued success.

On behalf of all of us at the Maritime Administration, I am pleased to join your families and friends in offering hearty congratulations to each of you. Your graduation marks the beginning of the greatest adventure of your life — one that you have worked toward by obtaining the knowledge and skills needed to chart your future course.
