US. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration Administrator 400 Seventh Street. S.W. Washington. D C 20590 Maritime Administrator (Acting) John E. Graykowski Message to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Class of 1998 I extend my sincere congratulations to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Class of 1998. During your time at Kings Point, you have learned much about the traditions of the sea. These honorable traditions—loyalty, diligence, comradeship, integrity and faith in oneself—will never change; they will augment and reinforce the professional skills you have acquired during the past c four years. DS You are to be admired for choosing the rigors of Academy life over a more routine curriculum at traditional colleges and universities. This Nation needs young, enthusiastic, energetic and committed individuals. You are a critical element to providing a strong U.S.-flag Merchant Marine and integrated national transportation system to support America’s economic and strategic defense goals. In pursuing your aspirations and meeting your future challenges, you ultimately must earn your success and achievements through hard work, competence and perseverance. With the training you received at Kings Point, I am confident that you will succeed. I salute you—the future leaders of the American maritime industry. Best wishes and Godspeed. Acting Maritime Administrator
