The 1997 Midships is dedicated to CAPT Moses W. Hirschowitz, USMS (Ret.) Professor Emeritus The 1997 Midships is dedicated to CAPT Moses W. Hirschowitz in appreciation of his outstanding service to the Academy during his 46 year teaching career. Professor Hirschowitz came to the Academy in 1949 as the first Chief Engineer member of the faculty to have a baccalaureate degree in engineering. He brought to the academy his experience in the Bethlehem Steel Shipbuilding Division’s Quincy, Mass, shipyard where he served in the test engineering group. He also brought with him rich experience in the operation of reciprocating and turbine machinery of operating ships at sea. During his early years as a faculty member, he pursued graduate study, earning his master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from New York State in 1957 and promoted to the rank of Full Professor in 1966. He undertook the study of the Nuclear Power Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology and entered the Nuclear Training program for the N S Savannah crew in 1957, becoming the first faculty member to attain a Nuclear Reactor Operator’s license while sailing onboard the N S Savannah in 1964. During his career, he has played an important and continuing role in the development of the Department of Engineering, its programs and facilities. Over the many years of his service, Professor Hirschkowitz has developed and taught a wide variety of courses ranging from introductory plebe level courses through the engineering sciences to the professional level courses given to firstclassmen. He has developed special courses in nuclear power and gas turbines, and has designed and brought into use special facilities to support the courses such as the nuclear laboratory facilities supporting the N S Savannah training program. He was for many years a primary builder of the Marine Engineering Laboratory facilities in Fulton Hall. He is also widely recognized as the “Father” of the Dual License Officer program at the Academy. During the 1970s, when the transition from steam to diesel propulsion of U.S. Flag vessels was getting underway, he took a sabatical to allow him to sail on U.S. and foreign flag motor vessels as a MARAD observer to provide him with a better understanding of the ever changing maritime industry and commercial vessel operations in order to better develop and coordinate Academy programs. Professor Hirschowitz’s impact has gone beyond the Academy. His students have gone on to develop important civilian and military careers, in the U.S. Merchant Marine at sea and ashore, in the U.S. Navy, nuclear and conventional, and shore based utility industry, in the maritime related manufacturing industry, in the navi architechture marine engineering research and design community and the shipbuilding repair segments of the nation’s industry. He has been and continues to be at the forefront of technological development in his field, serving in professional organizations and their technical committees, as a consultant to industry, and as a stimulus to sound thinking and judgment in all professional matters. Professor Hirschowitz’s remarkable career represents the finest tradition of excellence and dedication. His career has touched the lives of thousands of Kings Pointers. With this edition of Midships we pay tribute to his contributions to Kings Point. From all of us, thank you Mo. 3
