THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON June 24, 1997 I am delighted to congratulate the 1997 graduating class of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. At the dawn of the 21st century, our nation's success depends on our ability to capitalize on the talents of all Americans, particularly our young adults. I am pleased that you, our next generation of leaders and thinkers, have taken the lead by making a commitment to advance democracy and human dignity around the world. You have earned a degree, a Coast Guard license and an officer's commission. But, most important, the lessons you have learned -- perseverance, discipline, and dedication to duty -- will ensure your success in every future endeavor. Each of you can take pride in this achievement. Our nation is great because- of men and women like you, who are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to safeguard the fundamental freedoms and values we cherish. I thank you on behalf of our fellow Americans for your selfless service and steadfast devotion to our nation. Best wishes for every future success.
