We find ourselves at the crossroads in the history of the merchant marine. The legend and the lore of the sea coexist with the modern technological advancements of satellite navi- gation and nuclear propulsion. Much of the glory and roman- ticism of the old sailing days is eclipsed by our explorations into the future. And rightly so. All eyes must now look to the future. There is where our greatness lies, not in perpetuating anachronism. The diversity of a midshipman’s life and training provides a strong foundation for challenges ahead. Among the most valuable assets attained is a midshipman’s endurance and practical resourcefulness. Arduous circumstances coupled with unpleasant situations make life difficult to swallow. The bitter pill is all too familiar and common at Kings Point. The four years are paved with nothing certain except that everything is subject to change. It has been ingrained in our minds that everything is unpredictable as life is. Kings Point has trained survivors. Ahead lie discovery and the potential to put deter- mination and stamina to the test in the uncharted regions of the Real World.

Here is presented MIDSHIPS 1996, the logbook of the graduating class of midshipmen. The publication is unique. Its contents are simultaneously happy, funny and sad, much like our lives at Kings Point were. For all of the times that we felt trapped in a dark world, there was a way to step into the light. Friends, fun, and the pony system, for instance, established a fraternal bond that will never fade. The midshipmen were the glue that held the regiment together. While attending Kings Point, we were secluded in this microcosm. We put up with orders and regulations that were often inconsistent and un- fair. We were told that the midshipmen were not an interruption of the daily routine, but the reason for it. Yet we observed to our dismay that this was not always the case. A myopic mind set brews over the four years to stimulate midshipmen to deal with the shortcomings of midship- man life and tread the path, all for the sake of graduating. Kings Point mid- shipmen know how to save face, save money and save time. They have devel- oped over the four years into practical, efficient, and fun human beings who know how to get a job done. Like the salty alumni adage goes, “Kings Point is a miserable place to be but a great place to be from!” 14
