Each midshipman enters through thegmte at the beginning of plebe year and changes. We live. We learn. Magnanimous in victory. Resolute in defeat. Resentment is accofhpanied by a sense of accomplishment in what we have done. There is no denying the transformation that occurs to develop a plebe into a Kings Pointer. Turning through the pages of this book of experiences is evidence of the unique flavor of Kings Point. It is time captured still. The unending weeks and quarters now seem like insignificant blinks of the eye. The time that felt like it lasted forever has now swept by us. The habits and mentality acquired through our time span here are indelible marks in our spirits. Both attributes and stigmas justify our identity and our continued existence as the United States Merchant Marine Academy, for we are Kings Point- ers always and forever.

During the Sea Year, we had the chance to put our knowledge to the test, to he away from our familiar surroundings and to visit exotic, foreign shores. We set forth to carry on the traditions of the Academy and the merchant marine officer. We became intimate with the sea and her whims. We learned of ships, self- reliance, and the unconquerable power of the elements. The struggle of World War II strikes a chord in the heart of mariners because of the 142 cadet-midshipmen who sacrificed their lives for their country. The whimsical perils of the sea also took the life of one of our classmates. His soul was claimed by the oceans. His spirit will be forever raptured by the mystery of the sea. He may begone, but not forgotten. IWjtHiCAN MERCHANT MARINERS’ MEMO! kctIxNTWfrom the f .r.vOtfrr;on ty v WaK WTf 'IV 'f KSOff ,flF PEACEFUL COMMERCE. UNRECo .'IT l . . .
