The American Merchant Marine is the strongest link in the interglobal chain. It is to all the world a concrete manifestation of our faith in the future of international trade, and through such trade, the future of the world. The rust of apathy must not corrode this link, for on it rests our livelihood. As graduates and officers of this nation's merchant marine, touching count- less ports in distant lands, we are entrusted with an awesome responsibility. Carrying on the traditions of selfless devotion to duty, the U.S. Merchant Marine contributes to the service of our nation and our world. As individuals we experience the sea, appreci- ate her beauty and harness her power. The sea, once only heard from the shores, became our mistress. A fickle mistress, she claimed a fellow midshipman and the spirit of the sea is forever imbued in him. Aware of this common bond, we trust that the links within the chain of interdependence hold strong. We will go down to the sea once more. 9
