The Tradition Continues . . . May 21. 1994 li is my privilege to present the MERCHANT MARINE MERITORIOUS SERVICE MEDAL.authorized by the Secretary of Transportation, to NATHAN HODGES Midshipman in recognition of your courage and outstanding action, as set forth in the following citation: On September 13, 1992, at 1930 hours while en route from Yokohama. Japan, to Oakland, California, the merchant vessel SS SEALAND SPIRIT suffered a mishap onboard. Carbon Dioxide was accidentally discharged in the engine area, trapping four of the ship’s crewmembers. Midshipman Nathan Hodges along with Midshipman Matthew Snyder, both on shipboard training assignment from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, rushed to their assigned stations to provide assistance. Both Midshipmen, along with the crew of the SEALAND SPIRIT, were instrumental in providing assistance in the rescue of the stricken men. However, Midshipman Hodges donned a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), went into the engine room under the worst conditions and helped pull three men to safety. Even with the engine room Hooded with carbon dioxide, Midshipman Hodges continued to re-entertheengine room until three crewmembers were brought out. Tragically, one crewmember died as a result of this accident. Midshipman Hodges was directly responsible for assisting in carrying the men to safety up 4 and 5 ladders. After all the men were removed from the engine area and the carbon dioxide had been cleared out. Midshipman Hodges stayed in the engine room and assisted the Chief Engineer in restoring power to the ship. Midshipman Hodges is cited for his bravery and devotion to duty in rescuing the stricken crewmembers while on his training assignment onboard the SEALAND SPIRIT, at risk to his own safety. I congratulate you upon the performance of a service that displayed outstanding dedica- tion, courage, and disregard for your own personal safety. Your performance is in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States merchant marine. A.J. Herberger Maritime Administrator cta Non Verba! 7
