I MARITIME 111 ADMINISTRATOR US Department o Transportation Maritime Administration Administrator 400 Seventh Street. S W Washington. D C 20590 TO THE U.S. MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY'S CLASS OF 1993 As an alumnus of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and as Maritime Administrator, it is a pleasure for me to congratulate the members of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's Class of 1993. You now join a distinguished group of alumni who reflect a well-deserved reputation for the Academy's high standards and the scope of its curricula. American civilian seafarers have played a vital role in economic growth and securing and maintaining freedom since this country's inception. In peace and war, Kings Pointers have served their nation well. The Persian Gulf conflict graphically reminded the nation and the world of the importance of sealift potential and the willingness of merchant mariners to place country and patriotism before themselves. As you embark on your chosen careers, you can be proud of the role you are playing in continuing America's seafaring heritage, and ensuring that America will have the merchant vessels and merchant seafarers it needs to support its commerce and defense. I know that each of you will continue the proud heritage and traditions learned at Kings Point, and I am equally sure that you will face the challenges of our maritime industry in the 21st century with realism and courage. Sincerely, Herberger' Maritime Administrator

SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION FEDERICO PENA THE SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION WASHINGTON, DC. 20590 June 14, 1993 TO THE MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY CLASS OF 1993 You graduate at an exciting time when history and tradition meet change and hope for the future. This Academy was founded a half century ago to train merchant seamen who transported millions of tons of supplies during World War II. Just 2 years ago, your classmates moved cargo to supply Operation Desert Storm. You will be expected to carry on that tradition. Today, while the possibility of war has lessened, the challenges of peace are that much more daunting, and you will be on the front line in meeting those challenges as well. The United States is a leader in the world economy, and the skills and knowledge acquired at this Academy uniquely qualifiy you to move world trade. Whether on ship or shore, managing a shipyard or a steamship company, or using your education to improve intermodal transportation, you are the future leaders of one of the most important segments of our economy. Congratulations on your achievement in 4 years at Kings Point. You leave this Academy with one of the finest educations in the world. You have chosen an old, important and honorable profession. As you go forth into the military or the civilian work force, shipboard or shoreside, may each of you always enjoy fair winds and following seas. Federico Pena
