{ Congratulations to the members of the 1993 graduating class of the Merchant Marine Academy on completing four years of arduous training at sea and at the Academy. The Merchant Marine Academy was founded 50 years ago, when our nation was at war. Its mission was to train deck and engineering officers who were urgently needed to keep pace with the enormous wartime expansion of our merchant marine. By the end of the war, more than 7,000 officers had graduated from the Academy and were playing a pivotal role in launching the Allied offensives that crushed the Axis powers. You can take special pride in your Academy for all your fellow undergraduates who have served this country during wartime. In World War II, cadet midshipmen served with distinction and great valor, and 142 lost their lives. This tradition of sailing in harm's way continued through Korea and Vietnam. And during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, 151 Kings Pointers, including 81 in this class, served aboard ships supplying American and Coalition forces. Your hard work and dedication have earned each of you a degree, a Coast Guard license, and an officer's commission. But perhaps the most important assets you take from here are the qualities of self-reliance and motivation, along with a keen sense of duty and responsibility. They will serve you well wherever life leads you. Each of you in the Class of 1993 can take pride in reaching an important threshold in your lives. As you embark on your professional careers, you have my best wishes for continued success. May 28, 1993 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON

. VICE PRESIDENT ALBERT GORE Sincerely, A1 Gore TO THE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY CLASS OF 1993 Congratulations to the members of the 1993 graduating class of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. I share the pride of your family and friends as you take your places along side graduates who provide the Merchant Marine, Armed Forces, and transporta- tion industries officers of quality, integrity, and the highest professional standards. Since the “Class of 93” began the maritime experience four years ago, the world has changed. But the forces of the Merchant Marine are no less valuable. They are an essential component of our nation’s forces which must be ready to respond when called to action. The Merchant Marine Academy has been called upon to produce maritime leaders during every conflict since its establishment after World War I. Humanitarian missions, such as Restore Hope in Somalia, require leaders of the same mold. Our Nation will look to you to maintain this legacy of patriotism, professionalism, valor and honor. I am confident that you will continue to meet the high standard of accomplish- ment our country and the world have come to expect of America’s maritime leaders. The entire Gore family joins me in sending you congratulations and best wishes for continued success. THE VICE PRESIDENT WASHI NGTON
