10 Opening consciousness, it does not exist. Yet to those who have known and loved it, there can be no more noble profession. Our chosen way of life is built on a tradition which dates back past the start of recorded time. Early explorers and seafarers represented the cutting edge of their nations’ power and pres- tige. Undiscovered worlds lay at their feet, and wealth and glory were theirs for the taking. To go to sea one had to be both strong and brave, and even then conditions were a challenge. Far off cultures were usually first discov- ered and spread by seafarers. Although not always held high in public esteem, seamen were always respected for their knowledge of distant peoples and places.
