Dear Class of 1982: One of the most satisfying and pleasant duties of the Superintendent is to offer congratula- tions each year to the members of the graduating class. The 1982 Class is embarking on careers in an industry as old as humanity’s first fragile at- tempts to move itself and its goods over the ocean. Since then we have learned that no mat- ter how sophisticated and advanced our technology might be, the sea is still a challenge. But if any group of young men and women are qualified and prepared to face that challenge it will be our graduates. The Class of 1982, like its predecessor classes, has worked hard to earn its professional licenses and degrees. You have been prepared to take your place along side your fellow graduates who served America and our vital maritime industry. The rest is up to you. For my part, I am certain that the Class of 1982 will develop a record of achievement that will con- tribute to this Academy’s traditional excellence.
