The years of the second world war surely brought out all that was best in the merchant service. In addition to the natural perils of the sea that were always present, merchant mariners were forced to contend with the deadly German U-boat, a tool that was being used to cutoff the European nations from their suppliers in the United States. In spite of this, merchant mariners still continued to sail and deliver the goods, defending themselves by banding together in slow moving convoys. Heave-ho, my lads, Heave-ho! It’s a long, long way to go. It’s a long, long pull with our hatches full Braving the wind, braving the sea, fighting the treacherous foe. Heave-ho, my lads, Heave-ho! Let the sea roll high or low. We can cross any ocean, sail any river, give us the goods and we’ll deliver, Damn the submarine! We’re the men of the merchant marine. 11

During the war years, in order to man all the new ships that were coming out of the yards, schools were set up to train young men to serve as officers aboard merchant vessels. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is what remains of the U.S. Merchant Marine Cadet Corps which turned out many officers (both deck and engine) during the second world war. The graduates of the Cadet Corps and Academy continued on the fine tradition of the American Merchant Marine. At the end of the war, eight cadets of the Academy had been awarded the Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Medal for their heroic service. it fauram tfmt m c yAAAc ArcAa ,J nneJlSc£ 936 tuf antwu e '. aw FecMni um, JAa’ cf A cc if 7w Aba nAny t Ac United jWarmr (Eaftrf (tory?
