Why is it here? What purpose has it served, or does it serve, and what will the purpose evolve to, even in the very near future? The Academy of course is an institution, for what it’s worth, made up of buildings and paths; and fixtures, all with a past and a present and hopefully with a future. People make up an institute, many types of people. The instruc- tors are the obvious ones, and they are backed by the often recognized and honored administrators (another type of people). The people who cut the grass, rake the leaves, cut down the trees and occasionally clean up the build- ings is still another kind of people. These people are often given credit for things they are not responsible for and things they have not done. Then there are the people who operate quite successfully the services end of our institu- tion, such as the Canteen and hospital. Recognition of these individuals is pri- marily in private conversations, but nevertheless, they are given credit for their accomplishments. Who’s left? Well, the gate guards, Whiley Hall secretaries, and the fire chiefs. These groups are rated, recognized and thanked as part of the GS employee advancement pay scale based on length of services and other basic low pressure techniques. Now, is this an institution? Yes it is, but what services does it perform? The purpose of this institution is to provide capable men in the Maritime industry. That is the idea of the past, present and future, though, not as specific as some people would like it read. To perform this service, there is one other type of people needed: Students, or Midshipmen. If there were no Midshipmen, then this institution would probably only last a couple of years. The force that has caused this institution to be maintained in its steady state for all these years is probably mostly from Graduates and their accomplishments. So why not recognize the student element here; the Midshipmen. They forced most of the changes here and these only very recently. Graduates have proved the value of this institution. The all important element in this institution is the Mid- shipmen and the graduates. Midshipmen here, who fight the everyday urge to storm Whiley Hall, and undercover fight for improvement; and those who will come carrying their idealistic visions of what is to be, they keep this institution open and build its name. These are the people who deserve the greatest recognition, those who not because of, but in spite of all unnatural forces against them, fight their way through and prove that it really is worthwhile, the institution, and the men who have become part of it. We the staff, now offer this meager attempt at a display of the United States Merchant Marine Academy as it is, to you, the Midshipman, the gradu- ate, as our recognition of you. as one walks through vickery gate 7 and along the paths . . . and roads of this institution 9 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF BUSINESS MANAGER PHOTO EDITOR SEA YEAR COORDINATOR AND DAVID C. Post 47 28 Fordham 0 49 I f I t I football After an enthusiastic practice returning Coach George Paterno felt that a .500 season would be possible if all veteran seniors remained healthy. Appar- ently Paterno’s comments portended ominous events. Outstanding Q.B. Dave Buzanoski, the heart of the Mariners' offense, injured his knee in the Springfield Scrimmage and missed the first 6 games. Things began to look black when both Dennis Quinn, starting fullback and Tom McGrath, the bulwark of the secondary, also suffered knee injuries that kept them sidelined the major part of the season. An outstanding job by reserve Q.B. Bill Emerson got the Mariners by Norwich 1 3-6. Indications of a fine offense were shown, but costly mistakes made the game close. Defensively, Paterno discovered that a great deal of improvement was needed if the Midshipmen were to beat the better teams on the schedule. The same pattern followed next vs Gettysburg resulting in a 24-24 tie. Good offense — sloppy defense. However disaster struck again, both starting ends — Co-Captain Arnold Dimmling and Ivan Mihavlovic — were injured. Dimmling missed the following 3 games and Mihavlovic was out or the season! On a windy, rainy day the Mariners showed better sea legs outlasting Adel- phi 7-6. Although the defense began to show life, the offense showed signs of bogging down. Stellar running back Bob Young was injured as the injuries began to affect the team’s performance. A fine defensive effort vs a strong Drexel team was wasted as the young offensive team, minus its 2 key performers — Buzanoski and Young, sputtered. Drexel prevailed 14 to 7. Two other outstanding players were lost as Plebe Randy Tremont left school and starting guard Tricarico was lost for the season. An open date gave the Mariners a chance to lick their wounds before taking on Wagner and the meat of the schedule. Buzanoski was ready to go again. However a rusty defense allowed Wagner to score late and win 17 to 14. But the Mariners were showing signs of putting it all together. The following week the Mariners completely outclassed a powerful Lafayette team 20 to 0 in the finest victory in the school’s history. Defense was superb limiting the Leopards to 39 yards-rushing. The offense led by Buzanoski picked the Lafayette Defense apart in a stellar performance. The victory over Hofstra was almost a repeat of the Lafayette game! It looked like the young Mariner team had precociously developed inti' a strong unit. But alas the old injury bug hit again — Buzanoski was reinjure . Without its star Q.B. the Mariners had little chance vs the strong Post team led by Little All-American Q.B. Gary Wichard — add a lot of bad breaks and the Midshipmen succumbed 42-0. A routine 38-0 victory over Fordham closed out the season. The record was 5-3-1, surprisingly good considering so iany major injuries. Paterno ponders on what the record would have been with all bodies healthy but he is looking to the future! 50 51 52 I t ) I « i I ■ : The Cross-Country team was led by two plebes. Matt Lott of Mary- land and Gary Terpstra of Washington State, who before the end of the season became the 15th and 16th best on the all-time list of harriers over the famous Van Courtland Park course. Their times of 28:32 and 28:38, especially in their first encounter with college cross-country, were extremely fast. High expectations are hoped for these two men. A great surprise was the performance of Third Classman Pete Zindler, a 5'3 bundle of power and guts. Although The Machine is primarily a wres- 54 (tier who began running cross-country mainly for conditioning for wres- tling, he too just managed to get onto the list of all-time greats of K.P. with a time of 29:00 in the ICAAAA. (A time of 29:00 is the cut-off for inclusion on the K.P. List of All-Time Greats for Cross-Country. Lloyd Smith (1964) leads the list with a time of 26:53.8, followed by Joe Belmonte (1964) and Bill Sergeant (1962). Zindler is the last name on the list of 20 athletes who have run the 5-mile course at Van Courtland Park with the time of 29:00 or better. Charles Maher, Paul Stewart, Ken Reynolds and Karl Watts were other plebes who ran well as varsity members of the team. Brent Shoe- maker was the only senior who broke into the first five finishers for the season. He was also the captain of the team after mid-season. His best time of 29:10 was his best time during his career. John O'Leary, a second-class man filled out the squad. 55 I t ) I i 9 i ! soccer i The Soccer Team's 1971 season was rather disappointing for Coach Bob Wernersbacn. Early in the season, the team was hurt by several injuries. The starting goal-keeper, Ed Steck was put out for the season with a hernia. Starting halfbacks Bob Schmidt and Greg Ranher went next. Bob went to play the goal and Greg received a fractured leg. Many other minor injuries plagued the team throughout the year. Despite these circumstances, the team played well against tough opposition. Overall, the record was four wins and two losses. In the League, the team went two wins, three losses, but the facts don't tell the story. Four of the games were lost by only one goal, three of these late in the fourth quarter. One other was lost in an overtime period. Incidentally, Kings Point scored more goals than any other team in the League, getting a total of 29 tallies. There were some fine First Classmen on the team, players like Co- Captains Bob Schmidt and Kurt Miller. However, the majority of the starting lineup was composed of Underclassmen, including two Plebes. The Underclassmen showed their skill when they beat a tough Queens team 4 to 3 in the final game of the season. With players like future Co-Captains Billy Hughs and Jim Jenks returning, along with many other starters from this year, the 1972 team should have a great season. Bob Wernersbach is recruiting many good players from the area. He is also organizing winter practices and workouts for the team. With all the returning players and the talent that is coming, next year looks promising! 56 research and development 111! CAPT. L. S. McCREADY MRS. Crew was introduced as a varsity sport in the Spring of 1971. The first-year Mariners performed credibly enough to finish third in the team standings among 15 competing schools in the New York Met- ropolitan Championships. To conclude the season, the Varsity Lightweight Crew placed sixth in their division in the Dad Vail Regatta at Philadelphia — an event attracting upwards of 36 colleges and uni- versities. ifistsi i 178 Although the principal competing season is in the Spring, it is customary for schools to practice for approximately two months in the Fall for the develop- ment of new rowers. Attracting no less than 25 oarsmen who did not compete in the Spring, Kings Point boated novice crews which defeated their counterparts at such schools as Manhattan, Iona, Stony Brook, Fort Schuyler, and the Coast Guard Academy in Fall competition. Richard Halsted, Class of '62, is the Coach of the Oarsmen. Take ours, for instance. It's come to symbolize the highest standards of shipping service, efficiency and dependability. It stands for something more, too: Progress. 1971 marks our Silver Anniversary. And our flag is helping us to cele- brate in a big way. This year it's flying from the masts of our revolution- ary new LASH cargo ships and our newly acquired luxury liners SS Mariposa and SS Monterey. Look for the PFEL flag. It’s a sign of our company's dedication to ever improving our services to both shippers and passengers. ROUTE OF THE BEARS Executive Offices — San Francisco New York Washington. D C.
