Captain J. M. Dittrick, Head Of Dcparlment Mrs. L. Feldman. Sccretars The technological world is explored in the courses offered by the Depart- ment of Math and Science. Ably led by Captain Dittrick. students learn basic and advanced methods of calcu- lus, differential equations, and college algebra. Fundamental chemistry ac- quaints the students with the micro- scopic world of atoms and molecules. With these courses as background, they endeavor to master the physical world from levers and pulleys to the most recently found nuclear forces. The knowledge received from this phase of the Midshipman ' s education will be useful not only in design and efficiency of ships, but also in most other professional fields. From Row: Lt. A. J. GMCI P. BrasseL The Naval Science Department imparts to the .student a mili- tary facet to his education. Personal discipline is important not only to the naval officer, but also to the civilian in any profession; and it is to this end that courses in naval .science are designed. Students learn the weapons systems used, naval terminology, and some basic tactics. This allows those who have the desire to enter a career as a naval officer upon graduation with a minimal amount of additional training. Such knowledge would be useful to the merchant officer in time of war when naval and merchant vessels operate in close coordination. Courses have recently been revised and brought into a more modern scope, so that they might be applicable to contemporary problems. Commander Donald Robinson Jr.. k- Ih i 1 ' ■ ' :.» The Department of Maritime Law and Economics headed by Lcdr. W. W. Moore, endeavors to provide the student with the theoretical competence necessary for the appHcation of independent thought in these fields. The courses offered are designed to bridge the gap between the conventional classroom experience and the practical applications in the professional mer- chant marine, government, and private industries. In order to maintain a high degree of skill in an everchanging atmosphere, instructors are encouraged to return to schools and attend a modern education in law and economics. Instructors are also encouraged to become involved with the cadets by accompanying them on field trips and counselling for scholarships. A variety of electives are presently being established in the areas of management, transportation, and law and order to permit speciahzation according to the individual ' s interests. All of this is designed to enhance the quality and generally broaden the educational opportunities available to the student at Kings Point. From Row: Lcdr. W. Von Gronau. Lcdr. W. W. Moore, Lt. H.
