NAVAL SCIENCE KBOBBI • Fniiii Rim Ll. R. Hurlock. Cdr, D. Robinson Jr.. Lt. M. Beclmeyer. Second Row: Lt. Tillotson. Lt. T. Tillinghast. Lt. S. Lewis. Back Row: CMC R. Piper. GMCS J. Williams. GMCI P. BrasseL The Naval Science Department imparts to the .student a mili- tary facet to his education. Personal discipline is important not only to the naval officer, but also to the civilian in any profession; and it is to this end that courses in naval .science are designed. Students learn the weapons systems used, naval terminology, and some basic tactics. This allows those who have the desire to enter a career as a naval officer upon graduation with a minimal amount of additional training. Such knowledge would be useful to the merchant officer in time of war when naval and merchant vessels operate in close coordination. Courses have recently been revised and brought into a more modern scope, so that they might be applicable to contemporary problems. Commander Donald Robinson Jr.. USN Head of Department !l 36 r—i00t--fff i ' ij i .. ■ ■■ii «- ,

The Department of Humanities under the leadership of Captain Ferris is in the process iif ciMisiderahie change. To meet with the needs i r the students, a wide range of elective courses are being offered as student need and desire dic- tates. Sound judgement and intelligent planning have induced an ever increas- ing number to take elective courses. To be an engineer or deck officer alone is inadequate in today ' s Merchant Marine. Leaders must be aware of the problems of those under them; and must be able to express themselves fluently if they are to command the respect of a labor force, whose intelhgence is ever increasing. The Humanities Department can be proud of its outstanding personnel, five of whom have their doctorate degrees. With such qualifications the excellence of the education received can hardly be disputed. Captain Charles Ferris. USMS, Head of Department 35
