VP t •• The Department of Nautical Science prepares midshipmen to become compe- tent topside officers. Courses offered such as: Celestial Navigation. Electronics, Practical Seamanship. Astronomy. Meteorology, Naval Architecture, and Rules of the Road, are designed to provide both theoretical and practical education. Engineers receive courses programmed to acquaint them with the skills and du- ties of licensed deck officers along with basic training in safety of life at sea and fire fighting. One only has to look at the graduate records to realize the excellence of the education received at Samuels Hall. ■» . ' A i LU u z LU u 1- I f ' roni Row: Lcdr. R, May. Captain W. Hurdcr, Cdr. L. =H I The Department of Engineering ably led by Captain Lauren S. McCready has taken a progressive attitude toward education. Hindered by outdated equipment, which is slowly being replaced, the Department is handicapped somewhat in the practical side of instruction. Even so, the instructors manager to impart to the stu- dents a more than adequate education. Instructors are made to keep up with their field by such things as; research pro- jects in conjunction with Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, back to school programs, readily available professional literature, cadet ' s sea projects, and mem- bership in professional organizations. Frequent trips on United States Merchant- men also help to maintain an updated Department. Engineering electives are being instituted on a broad basis for next year ' s new curriculum. These should provide the students with some degree of specialization withm their respective tields. The Nuclear Engineering Program is a good example of this. The new program will provide greater effectiveness to the Department, and should attract more students interested in related fields of study.
