The United States Merchant Marine Academy was conceived in anticipation of the need for properly trained officers to man the nation’s growing merchant fleet. The out- break of the second world war gave dra- matic evidence of the value of a strong merchant marine. Plans for officer train- ing materialized swiftly, and, a quarter- century ago, Kings Point was born. It has endured, and continues to serve. These first pages of introduction to the 1969 Midships provide a graphic represen- tation of change and growth during the Academy’s first twenty-five years. On the reviewing stand during the Dedication Day regimental revieiv were the Superintendent and the Commandant of Cadets, USMMA, the Commandant of the Third Naval Dis- trict, the Deputy Administrator for Training of the I far Shipping Administration, and the Superintendent of the Maine Maritime Academy.
