 The Emory Rice, seen on the left in the photograph above, was an early Academy training ves- sel. Her masts and reciprocating steam engine are now obsolete as practical means of propulsion for merchant ships. The instru- ment-laden Kings Pointer, shown at right, serves today as a float- ing laboratory in which deck midshipmen gain practical ex- perience in modern electronic navigation techniques.

lira C ENE The War Memorial has long been an Academy landmark. Originally, the monument to Kings Pointers lost in action during WW II was located at the top of the Oval, near the flagpole. The new memorial, shown here from several angles, is situated on the lawn sloping downward from Wiley Hall to- ward Long Island Sound. 6

ACADEMICS The development of facilities for study in the fields of marine engineering and nautical sci- ence has been continuous over the past twenty- five years. Additions and changes are made in course programs and equipment to keep pace with the demands of the rapidly developing maritime industry. Subjects such as electronics and automatic control systems are becoming increasingly significant to today’s merchant marine officer as basic tools of his profession.
