As a first classman the Cadet becomes eligible for appointment as a cadet officer and he also bears the major responsibility for maintaining the standards and traditions of the Academy and for passing them on to succeeding classes.

Steam engineering laboratories and stability and trim models prepare cadets to efficiently and safely operate the ships of today and the nuclear laboratories prepare them for service in the nuclear merchant fleets of the future.
