As the ships of the American Merchant Marine sail the trade lanes of the world, they form a vital link in joining the cultures, the commerce and the peoples of all nations and continents with those of the United States. Because of the importance of this task, and because of the importance of our merchant ships to our national defense, we must maintain an efficient, effective Merchant Marine. You who have been trained—and are in training—to serve aboard our merchant ships of the future can carry with you the gratifying thought that as you serve your country's ships on the oceans and in the ports of the world, you also serve your Nation. 0 v r£o
