f EDICATION Each of us in his time must graduate. We, who in a few short months will complete our course of studies, regard the future with the self confidence born of exposure and the certain misgivings of the neophyte. So too our most il- lustrious fellow graduate must feel as he looks forward to separation from the Service which has claimed the major portion of his life. The present Superintendent of the Academy, Rear Admiral Wilfred N. Derby, is a member of the Class of 1911. Green pastures are his future, new horizons are ours. Our train- ing, education, our appreciation of the Service traditions have been his responsibility. Our duty now lies in fulfill- ing the trust and confidence which he has placed in us. It is only fitting that we who are about to embark upon our Service careers should pay homage to one who has so suc- cessfully completed that same career. To Admiral Derby we humbly and respectfully dedicate this book.
