COMMENCEMENT Balancing the demands of studies and extra-curricular service, the student leader arrives at that most exciting day. THE REAL LEADER HAS NO NEED TO LEAD- HE IS CONTENT TO POINT THE WAY. Henry Miller Effective leadership requires a great deal of skill, a variety of talents. It is not enough for a student leader to set a good example or make the right decisions. He or she must also motivate others to do their most excellent work. The test of a good leader is not how much the individual does but how much and how well he encourages others to serve. Good leaders know how to deal effectively with people. They trust others with responsibility and are rewarded for that trust with cooperation and productivity from the people they lead. Good leaders are counselors. They are supportive of the people they lead, recognizing talents and encouraging others to apply their special skills to the project at hand. Leadership skills are valuable skills for a student to have. The United States Achievement Academy recognizes the importance of leadership abilities and joins with teachers and counselors throughout America in honoring those young people who exhibit exemplary leadership. Only those student leaders who meet the Standards for STUDENT MEETINGS The ability to command the attention of a crowd and to speak with ease and authority are valuable skills for a student leader to have.

HELPING HANDS He leads best who sets a good example of service. Selection set forth by the Academy are included in this year- book of outstanding students. The standards are: l. Dedication 2. Dependability 3. Citizenship 4. Leadership 5. Support of his or her group or organization 6. Enthusiasm 7. Official recommendation 8. Example to young people 9. Attitude and cooperative spirit 10. Responsibility Student leaders spend many hours and years contributing to their schools, churches, and community organizations. The purpose of the National Leadership and Service Award is to pay tribute to the devotion and service of these young people. Pride in a job well done is the finest reward for good leadership and service. The NLSA Award from the United States Achievement Academy is tangible praise for the extra efforts of the student leader. Woodrow Wilson said: If you would be leader of men, you must lead your own generation, not the next. The outstanding young people represented in these pages have proven their abilities among peers, and gained experience that will prepare them for adult leadership roles. l l COLLECTING THOUGHTS The young leader needs time to collect her thoughts, plan work schedules, and originate ideas.
