Letter from the Publisher .ll Quite often we hear of members of our society who have attained high achievement in a particular field of interest. The astronauts who recently took part in The Space Shuttle program are an example. Other examples are the many outstanding Americans and internationally known celebrities who have agreed to appear in the USAA Hall of Fame as an inspiration to young people across the United States. Not all of our nation's outstanding citizens, however, are able to receive the recognition they so rightly deserve. This has been true for a number of years with thousands of high school students throughout America. Outstanding students deserve to be recognized for their contributions to and achievements in our society. To locate these high achievers and award them is a concept that is long overdue. u The United States Achievement Academy contacted high school coaches, counselors, directors and teachers across the nation and presented them with standards of selection to nominate their outstanding achievers. The award winners honored in this volume are the nation's finest high school students and are representatives of outstanding students in their field. Now, when the award winners move into fields of specialization, we will be able to look back and see history recorded with their early biographies. We have made every effort to insure all biographies are accurate and that nominations have been properly processed. The United States Achievement Academy hopes that everyone will enjoy reading about the many fine accomplishments of these individuals. We also wish the award winners continued success as they move forward in developing a greater America. Cordially, if Dr. George Stevens Executive Director United States Achievement Academy 3
