EXTRA EFFORT The student achiever always gives a little more than he has to, and his efforts are rewarded, whether in a precisely choreographed tumbling routine, or in a well-written school report. THE REWARD OF A THING WELL DONE IS TO HAVE DONE IT. Ralph Waldo Emerson The United States Achievement Academy is committed to recognizing and granting honor to outstanding young people in America. Realizing that talents differ and that academic excellence is not the only form of achievement, the Academy honors individuals in different categories of endeavor. In addition to the scholastic disciplines such as math, science, English and history, award categories include music and sports. The young person who excels in the position of first chair violin in the orchestra is as deserving of honor and recognition as the star quarterback or the honor roll scholar. No one is better able to objectively assess a student's performance-in the classroom, the theater, the concert hall or in the playing field,-than the professionals who come in contact with the student during the school day and in the community. The Academy invites only teachers, counsel- ors, coaches and community leaders to submit nominations. There are precise selection standards which these profes- sionals must follow when determining who is worthy of rec- ognition. These ten Standards, for Selection are a student's academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, depend- ability and recommendation from a teacher, counselor or community resource. To ensure recognition of the most qualified individuals, the Academy limits the number of award winners in each category. In all, less than 1096 of the nation's junior high and high school students are so honored. LIBRARY LABORS Any student wishing to achieve academic success knows well the school library.
