SOFTBALL SUPPORT Sports provide an excellent outlet for those young people interested in fostering community spirit. The United States Achievement Academy National Lead- ership and Service Awards are a special way of recognizing the young volunteer's eiforts. Recipients of this award com- mendation are nominated by community leaders because they meet the Standards for Selection set forth by the Acad- emy. Those standards are: 1. Dedication 2. Dependability 3. Citizenship 4. Leadership 5. Support of hisfher community 6. Enthusiasm 7. Official recommendation of community leader 8. Example to young people 9. Attitude and cooperative spirit 10. Responsibility The personal satisfaction of contributing to one's commu- nity is the most important reward for community service. But it is an additional encouragement to have fellow citizens recognize that contribution. The United States Achievement Academy National Leadership and Service Award is a sym- bol of grateful recognition of which the young community leader should be very proud. COMMUNITY CFIUSADE Adults and youths alike join in a good cause. NO ONE IS USELESS IN THIS WORLD WHO LIGHTENS THE BURDENS OF ANOTHER. Charles Dickens There is a unique sense of pride that results from contribu- tion to one's community. With pressures of school, of job, or family, it would seem difficult today to iind time to work for the community. For those special highly-motivated vol- unteers, it is not a hardship, but a joy. The community volunteer has many avenues of service open to him or her. Whether it be contributing to the annual bazaar or representing one's organization at a regional meet- ing, the responsibilities are great and the rewards even greater. Young people are making an impact in their chosen com- munity organizations more than ever before. The camp leader or the fund raiser is often a young volunteer who has chosen to dedicate a portion of his or her time to enrich- ing the life of the community. An effective community servant is usually a special blend of talents. There must be drive and determination, an opti- mistic attitude and cooperative spirit, coupled with a fervent desire for community improvement. l l UNIQUE CONTRIBUTION Young people can make a contribution to community events in a variety of special ways.
