LION HEARTED HEART BEAT' The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement A man never stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child.'' Keep some pep in your step and pride in your stride.'' Do these quotes sound familiar? They are a few of our assistant principaT s many mottoes. Mr. Eederinko has become our unofficial leader of United spirit and one man cheering section for the whole school. When Mr. Eeder-inko walks into the gym during a pep assembly. the crowd ripples and breaks into a wave of applause and often gives him standing ovations. ft is not surprising that Mr. Eederinko is so popular- he never misses any of many games, meetings, assemblies that are held at United. His hand is always outstretched, ready for a hand shake or pat on the back. He readily leads emotional support to students who need it More official duties take up Mr. Eederinko's time, however. He is assistant principal and sponsors the Student Council. Mr. Eederinko writes federal grant proposals and records at- tendance for the federal government. These Jobs insure students' federal funding for our school district But Mr. Eederinko is best remembered for special qualities he possesses: his positive attitude. enthusiasm, encouragement and warmth toward students. We thank him for turning what could be a frightening place into one that is filled with hope and encouragement 2 MEY? Mas anyone seen Kate? Where's the beach? ri' . Who needs a beach when there's a man like this in your room?! On May 31-June 2 the '87 Senior Class Answered the puzzling question of where's the beach, it's in Virginia,'' they said as they looked off the balconies of the Ocean Isle Motel. Approximately 70 seniors went on the trip to Virginia Beach and Busch Gardens. The 1st day was spent on the beach and concluded with a beach partyr On day 2 everyone travelled to beautiful Busch Gardens. The 3rd day was spent on the beach again. Then at 2:00 the buses departed Virginia for the trip home. Do you think he's ready for the movies? Brian Krevetski. and Troy Stiffler scored TD'S and led the Lions to a 200 victory, while Shelly Griffith was crowned Homecoming Queen during halftime festivities. Then at 7:00 FM students and alumni filled the gym and danced to Beach Boys favorites played by DJ Sam Foster. B [ J Despite the loss of 17 offensive and defensive starters the United football team began drills in August with thoughts of another championship season. The lions quickly established themselves as a quality team by winning their first four games. A tough 10-7 loss to Blairs-ville eliminated the Lions in the quest of a third consecutive Appalachian Conference Title. The lions quickly regrouped, faced adversity, and began their quest for an appearance in the District VI Playoffs by winning four straight games. A 16-7 win over Bishop McCort set up the championship game with Richland. At the Point Stadium, United won the District VI AA Championship by defeating the Rams 27-6. The senior players are leaveing UHS with a 30-2 record. Two Applachian Conference titles, and a District VI AA Championship. Congratulations! Back row: (l-r) Joy Schuller, Judy Burkhardt, Coach Deem, Anita Shirey. The 1986-87 girls volleyball team faced many ups and downs. Only 2 members of the starting varsity had any previous varsity experience. While winning only one game in the seven matches at the WCCC Tournament in late August, the girls played well against some of the best high school volleyball players in the state. The team opened its regular season with a win over Laurel Valley but lost the next six matches. Another victory over L.V. and a win against Blairsville set the team record at 3 wins and 11 losses for the year. Exceptional play by setter Becky McLaughlin and back court specialist Irene Burkhardt made for some exciting volleyball in the U.H.S. gym. Stalwart performances were also turned in by starters Sharon Becker, Jeanine Maschak, Kelli Heming and Amy Brendlinger. Amy was chosen for the Indiana County 2nd team which Becky and Irene received honorable mention and accolades. Front row (l-r): Anita Pease, Jacinda Wilkins, Jennifer Lonas, Amy Starry. Shelly Novak. Wendy Koske. Marsha Lindsey, and Nellie Stinson, and with that, knew that with hard work they'd be successful. SHOULD Practices were very intense and the girls showed great desire and attitude. Three underclassmen: Tracy Rohra-baugh, Tracy Pease, and heather Shearer, began to show potential and battled the five letterman for position. I WILL- The Lady Lions won their first game of the season by defeating Portage. They showed their defensive talent and were on their way to an awesome season. DID The girls finished their regular season 11 -13, a school record for wins. They entered the District IV playoffs for the first time in the history of UHS. The team played a very agressive game against Bishop McCort but, lost 53-62. This showed the style of play the girls developed and used all year, never giving up, hustling until the final buzzer, and having a positive attitude about every game. Their coaches were especially proud of them and the type of play they displayed. The girls broke 16 individual and team records during the season. Coach Laurie Deem The JV team closed its season with a recored of 12 wins and 10 losses. The ability to convert turnovers, forced by a full-court press, into points accounted for most of the teams success. With a roster of seven freshmen, one sophomore and one junior, inexperience was a factor throughout the season. Tracy Rohrabuagh led scoring with 140 points while Wendy Koske (112) and Toni Silbaugh (74) led rebounding. Clancy Silk and Kristie Silk rounded out the starting five and Leslie Mack offered aggressive play in a back-up position. THERE'S A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING .vfe rsfc The first pep assembly honoring the varsity girls was held before the District VI playoff game. Because all of the freshmen moved up to varsity, they started their season with two part-time players, and 26 inexperienced 7th and 8th graders. The girls came through with a 13-3 season due to a will to win and work ethic. The girls began the season with the pressure of a 29 game winning streak. They extended it to 32 games before losing to Marion Center, but later in the year avenged that defeat by beating Marion Center 23-21.
