Couples danced through the Garden of Dreams , which was the title chosen by the Junior Class. Music was provided by The Continentals. Juniors made money for this annual affair by having bake sales and o Junior Closs dance. 8 Garden of Dreams Decorotions for the prom included streomers of red, pink, ond white, ond o garden scene centerpiece. The center-piece was composed of a wheelbarrow of flowers, a lily pond, ond on apple tree in full bloom. The evening came to on exciting climax at Richland Bowl, the scene of the after prom porty. These girls carry the American flag. United High School flog and guns in front of our band. At halftime you may see the same four girls twirling flogs. United's majorettes pose for a picture in the gym just before a pep assembly. These mojoretttes lead the band in parades ond football gomes. For the first time, all six lovely majorettes play instruments in the concert bond. 41 Student Council The Student Council is the student government of our school. They hove a meeting once every two weeks. The Student Council is in charge of refreshments ot oil home bosketball gomes and wrestling matches. The Junior High Student Council is just os active of United os the Senior High. They take port in the projects and also in selling refreshments. Miss Sarah Coruso is sponsor of this group. 42 Spanish Club This club sponsored by Roland Warzel. fakes the Spanish student into the geography of Spain and the life of a family. Dramatics Club The Dromotics Club sponsored by William Jordan is helpful in the production of the school play. The club members learn about staging, directing, dramatizing and selling of tickets for the onnual school ploy. 43 Blue and White Star Staff Mrs Riddle, advisor, helps editor Janice McGinnis and coeditor Glen Busch look for assignments. Football ’67 Despite a fair 4-5 season, the Lions thrilled fans with several fine performances. United won the opener with Blocklick Volley 34-13, but suffered their initial setback the following week by losing a tough game to Ferndale 12-0. Upon their second visit to Point Stadium, the Lions roared by Conemaugh Valley 25-0. The slumping Lions dropped the next three games to Homer Center 31-20 on Homecoming, Northern Cambria 27-7, and Forest Hills 34-14. The season's highlights centered around the victory over the previously undefeated Penns Manor Comets 28-20. Next Blairsville stunned the Lions with a 54-6 score. The final game of the season ended in a 25-6 win over Purchase Line. Tackle George McLaughlin was honored by being chosen for the first team of the Johnstown Tribune Democrat team. Ed Sievers, halfback and Tom Lavis, center, received Honorable Mention. Ed Sievers made Indiana All-County first team, while Tom Lavis and George McLaughlin were on second string. Basketball ’68 Varsity Coach Steve Yewcic $ Lions turned in a winning 11-10 record this season. United fans enjoyed many thrilling, exciting, and close games, turned in by our basketball team. The season opener with Laurel Valley allowed our Lions a 37-36 victory. Elders Ridge and Conemaugh Valley were clawed by the Lions 76-59 and 70-64 respectively. Blacklick Valley, Laurel Valley, Northern Cambria, and Elders Ridge defeated United by narrow margins. The Lions walked all over Marion Center 62-47, but were defeated 79-43 by Homer Center. They roared past Blairsville 72-64 and Purchase Line 54-49. An exciting game between Penns Manor and United garnered the Lions their third consecutive victory. Again Yewcic's Lions outscored Marion Center, but lost 69-52 to the Indiana County League Leading Homer Center Wildcats. Rallying, the Lions stunned Blairsville 82-70. Purchase Line and Cambria Heights bowed to the roaring Lions by scores of 76-48 and 48-47 respectively. United lost their next game to a revengeful Penns Manor team 64-59. Fired up Cambria Heights swept by United 68-35 and Conemaugh Valley outscored the Lions 65-56. The final game of the season showed Blacklick Valley slipping by United 61-57. An outstanding Faculty versus Varsity Game highlighted the season with the varsity's coming out on top by a 66-57 margin. Varsity Wrestlers Wrestling ’68 Cooch Bill Wilt's Varsity wrestlers turned in an excellent 7-3 record, thus triumphantly ending the 1968 season. This has tied the school record. Although plagued by injuries. United copped first place in county action. During the initial outing, Cambria Heights handed our Lions their first defeat of the season 30-26. Our grapplers outscored Blairsville 27-18. but lost the next bout 29-17 to Westmont. The lions then squeaked by Chestnut Ridge 27-25. At Marion Center the Lions lost 29-19 but bounced back the following week by defeating Richland 40-10. Saltsburg was United's next victim and lost 39-12 to the commanding Lions. Conemaugh Township's Indians were scalped 27-22 by the crushing paw of United's grapplers, who the following week defeated Elterton 40-17. The final match of the season was held at Ferndale and proved to be the most exciting match of the season with United handing Ferndale a disappointing 29-20 blow. At the District 6 Section 4 Wrestling Tournament, United had five wrestlers to advance from the preliminaries held on Friday, February 16. They were 95 lbs. Bill Strong, 120 lbs. Frank Stewart, 127 lbs. Red McGinnis, 165 lbs. Bill Ritenour, and heavyweight Jan Stiffey. In the semifinals on Saturday, Bill Strong and Frank Stewart garnered the only victories for United. Bill Strong, brother of Larry Strong who was 103 lbs. State Champ last year, defeated Haney from Johnstown in the finals, thus securing a trip to Altoona for the District 6 Wrestling Tournament.
