DEDICATION In Memoriam James Halaburda In memory of our departed classmate, James Michael Halaburda, the 1965 La Vista Staff expresses its sorrow for the loss of a friend. James, known as Jim to his friends, was to have graduated with us this May. A deep tragedy took him from our midst. He was killed in an automobile accident, March 15, 1964. His absence is sadly felt, but it is our wish that his memory will remain with each senior throughout the years. To his family we extend our sincerest 2 sympathies. ...Page 88 Faculty ...Page 8 Seniors ...Page 16 Underclassmen Sports ...Page 68 Activities .Hi INTROD Indications are that the 1964-65 school term has been the most prosperous of the past nine years of jointure. Despite problems involving increased enrollment, the Junior-Senior High split, the new dress code, and married students, this past year has revealed a satisfactory adjustment to the new changes. UCTION Members of the yearbook have strived diligently to record the events of the fruitful year which has just passed. We hope that the memories of this year shall be retained by each student for a life time. May the 1965 La Vista help us to cherish the experiences gained at our beloved Alma Mater-United High School. 5 FACULTY If it wasn’t for our administration and faculty, UHS would be of little educational value. These dedicated people instructing us in this very important stage of our lives, have given us the power to face the world with confidence. These people are held in our highest esteem; they demand our utmost respect. Their task is to prepare teenagers for the future. They are very important men and women. Should they ever fail we students, our small world would feel the effects. The school board entrusts these people with preparing almost 1,000 people for future years. The 1965 La Vista staff salutes these men and women; they have prepared us for our new life. Picture; Miss Caruso, Mr. McCoy, and Mr. Farabaugh are having a discussion. Administration Paul R. Those years were filled with the happiest moments, and the saddest disappointments. The sophomore year, our first in senior high, was the most difficult; that year we chose our curriculums. Confusion reigned for the first few days, but eventually we settled nicely into our new schedules. Under the leadership of our president, Andy Pisarcik, we sponsored a dance, the Sophomore Stomp, on March 16. Our junior year began as smoothly as our sophomore year had ended. Once again the class chose Andy Pisarcik as its leader. Happiness encircled us as we sponsored dime dances, bake sales, and the junior class dance. All these activities helped to launch a successful Oriental Enchantment Jr.-Sr. Prom on April 24. But also that year we felt the sting of tragedy when a well-loved member of our class, Jim Halaburda, was taken from our midst by an automobile accident. We will never forget the lessons that experience taught us in our second year of senior high. This year has proved to be even greater than the previous two. With John Fletcher as our leader we sponsored many activities. Composed of seniors, the yearbook and newspaper staffs, met the demands of an anxious student body. From our ranks, the May Queen and her court were chosen. During the past three years, 143 students have prepared for many different fields. When the class of 1965 leaves United you will not see the timid children that arrived here six years ago, but confident young men and women looking forward to new horizons. As we depart each and everyone of us will feel a twinge of reluctance, for we will be leaving behind some of the best years of our lives. Picture: Mr. and Miss Senior: Andy Pisarcik and Betty Pease. Just as previous classes have done, they are taking another step up the long ladder to seniority. As of yet, they haven't thought much abut the future, only of the experiences waiting for them in their lives as students. With avid anticipation these fun loving underclassmen wait for the moment when they can prove themselves better than the class preceding them. As our student body grows and prospers, we hope that they will always remember to carry on the fine traditions of United High School. United offers football, basketball, wrestling and track in its interscholastic sports program. Participation in organized sports teaches the importance of cooperation, responsibility and the desire to win. Without these three traits, one could not survive in todays fast moving world. Most students have a well rounded curriculum of both academics and activities. Our administrators realize it is just as important to develop mental and moral qualities as it is to build up academic abilities. The students of United are lucky to have such a wide variety of clubs to choose from. In different fields, the students work to make their club success!ul. Marked with many campaigns and social affairs, this past school year has been a busy one. During the last nine months almost every student enrolled at United has been in some way affected by at least one activity. The daily activity period has provided many happy and educational hours. Clubs teach ideals and morals. How many clubs did you belong to this year? Picture: United's and Westmont's Bands join together in the playing of our National Anthem. MAY DAY 1964 QUEEN JUDY WATERS reigned over May Day festivities, held on May 1-2, 1964, in United's gymnasium. Besides the traditional Hemlock Chain and Maypole, many new acts were viewed. Several countries were represented by folk dances and songs performed by underclassmen. Some of the dances were the Busy Body, Seven Jumps, Road to the Isles, Heat Wave, Tinikling, and Teton Mountain Stomp. Some gifted students performed in girls and boys specialty tumbling. The program was under the direction of Mrs. Alice Dickie and Mr. Stephen Yewcic. 90 The members of the hemlock chain sneak in a little practice before the show. The girls, who are all honor students from the 11th and 12th grades, spend several days making the chain out of pine and hemlock. During a practice session, the boys specialty tumbling group show some of their skill as acrobats. Dolly Thomas, a senior academic student, gives her version of the dance Heat Wave while interested students look on. 91 C ouples dance around the Oriental center piece to the music of Jimmy Canon's Band while other couples enjoy relaxation on the side.
