Presenting: Your Life As A 1 Student! What we feel in our hearts cannot be expressed in words as we try to show our gratitude to Mrs. Winslow and Mr. Madill who have given much of themselves in an effort to make us better and happier citizens. We are grateful to them for so many things, but we are especially grateful to Mrs. Winslow for the knowledge of English that she has so patiently instilled on our minds, and to Mr. Madill for the fine example of sportsmanship that he has set for boys and girls alike. 2 Both are top-rate teachers, second to none. Their patience with us went to them with questions, their belief in us that we would make tf these are the things we shall cherish. We wish to express our thanks for the inspiration they of us students would have fallen by the wayside had they their confidence in our ability to succeed. Because of hopes and dreams may come to their fullest realization. Throughout the many years that they have been with us, Mrs. Winslow and Mr. Madill have become symbols of knowledge. We of the Class of 1960 wish to express to them the gratitude that we feel in our hearts for all they have meant to us. us by efforts, our 3 CONTENTS I, the 1960 La Vista, present unto you, a student of United High School, the story of your life. After these future orators have developed some skill they hope to compete with other schools' forensic clubs. Airplane Club Instructing students in all forms of model building and aviation is the purpose of Mr. Frederick St. Clair's Junior High Airplane Club. The Club attained new heights this year by launching a satellite. 55 Red Cross Club Perhaps more than any other club at United, the Red Cross Club truly exemplifies the spirit of giving. Share! Earn! Care! Save! is their motto. The members visit Veterans' hospitals and homes for the aged. They also conduct clothing drives for needy families and correspond with the students in foreign lands. The Library Club's main purpose was to take care of the library and repair all damaged books. All members helped keep the display windows and books bright and cheerful. Miss Millie Cerutti, the capable librarian, chose several members to be her assistants. These student librarians did a tremendous job in keeping the library an orderly and attractive room in which to study. This was achieved under Miss Cerutti's guidance and her never ending desire to help all students. Library Club 56 National Honor Society Membership in the National Honor Society is the highest honor that a student can receive at United High. This organization gives recognition to those students who have most nearly attained the four cardinal principles of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. According to the constitution of the National Honor Society, the faculty may elect a maximum of 15% of the junior class. These students are inducted into the membership during one of the two formal ceremonies held each year in the auditorium. This should greatly improve the Blue and White in future years. The members study the parts of a newspaper and various writing styles by reading and criticizing city papers. The Projectionist Club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Donald Bufagna, trains interested students in the proper operation and maintenance of audio-visual equipment. The club's main function is to operate this equipment for classroom work, assemblies, and social and athletic functions throughout the school. Plucking the bass violin is Joe Vangeri. Joe is so adept on the bass that he also plays in the Johnstown Youth Symphony Orchestra. Jim Jenkins adds a rousing beat with his percussion section. The line up of the sax section consists of Betty Medsger on first alto sax, Bing Stephens a second alto sax. Sue Orbin on tenor sax, and Roy Harding on baritone sax. Although losing 14-7 to Richland, United's Lions played one of their best games of the year by holding the high-scoring Rams to 14 points. Penrod. We have added another important page to our sports department this year. The first wrestling team in the history of the school has been formed by Mr. Frey, the Junior High Football Coach. Mr. Frey was a member of the wrestling team during the four years he attended Indiana State Teachers College. Mr. Frey is being assisted by Bob Lyons, a Senior who participated in wrestling before coming to United. Wrestling is our only American sport that teaches our boys to fight when they are off their feet. It is one of the oldest and most valuable forms of competitive activity. In countries which are run by the state, the boys are taught wrestling during school days as a basis for future military service. Wrestling, when used as a part of an all-round program, will also help youth in the development of courage, and confidence in ability to take care of themselves in personal combat. Wrestling is not as common in high school as football, basketball, and baseball but it is slowly taking hold and moving up with the others. Twenty-five boys have reported for this new addition to the United Athletic Program. The boys range from seventh to eleventh grade. The team plans to wrestle a few practice meets this year, and if possible to arrange a varsity schedule for next year. 81 United Retains State Track Title United has again produced another of the best track teams in the state. For the second consecutive year our team has captured the State Championship by nosing out Bristol by 1 Vj points. Hank Waters, our versatile star, again led the team by taking first place in the 180 yard hurdles, the 220 yard dash and running lead off leg in the 880 yard relay. The 880 relay team of Hank Waters, Bill Walsh, Jim Houser, and Lanny Dixon put United's name on the books as they set a new State record of 1:31.7. Also placing in the state were Dean Stiles, 2nd place pole vault, John Draksler 4th place shot-put, mile-relay team 2nd, and Bill Walsh tied for 3rd in the 440 yard run.
